Nintendo officially tooted its own horn Tuesday, releasing the details of the Nintendo Wii’s first week on the retail market.
The system has already topped 600,000 sales in the United States. Through the eight days following the Nov. 19 launch, the system has sold at a rate of roughly “one per second,” according to Nintendo. With the movement of systems, games and accessories, Nintendo claims the system has already generated about $190 million.
"Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it’s clear this is one of the 'gotta-have' products for the holiday season," stated Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We’ve shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time – and we still sold out. Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we’re seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch."
Nintendo also stated more than 75 percent of Wii owners flocked to the Wii’s flagship title, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which has already sold more than 454,000 copies.
"That other company," managed more than 81,000 units sold in Japan during its first two days according to Media Create. While Sony has yet to post an official tally of its totals for the U.S. Playstation 3 launch, it will also hit Europe in March. Currently, Nintendo plans to hit the rest of the world market with the Wii in various territories Dec. 2-8.
