Nintendo DS: Zhu Zhu Pets

As you may recall, last Christmas Zhu Zhu pets, these little furry robotic hamsters, were the equivalent of gold, at least for kids. Remember Tickle Me Elmo and Cabbage Patch Kids, back in the day? Same thing. Now the Zhu Zhus have been brought to life in a most delightfully fun game for Nintendo DS.

Players gets to pick their pet from the sweet and adorable assortment of Mr. Squiggles, Chunk, Num Nums, Patches, Nugget, Winkie, Jilly, Scoodles, and Pip Squeek (there are also baby Zhu Zhus which come into play later in the game).  It is then left up to the player to be sure their furry friend receives everything they need to grow and stay healthy and loved. This is actually fairly simple since a bubble appears over the Zhu Zhu's head indicating what they need, be it love and attention, food, sleep, or a bit of bathroom time.

In addition for caring for your pet, there are game tunnels which you must lead your hamster through to collect certain items. The completion of one tunnel unlocks another and the completion of that one unlocks another, etc. One twist to the game is that after you have shown you are able to play with and care for your pet you gain more pets, which you must care for and play with to keep them alive, happy, and well.

The game, though simple in nature is fun and perfect for its target audience. My seven-year-old loves it and even I enjoy playing for a bit of mindless fun.  As with the physical toy Zhu Zhu pets, the game contains cars for them to drive, skateboards, hamster balls, and fun little gadgets and activities for you and your virtual pet to enjoy together.  Each pet has his or her own unique sounds and personality, which make for tons of giggly fun.
