SIN/Wages of Sin
MacPlay
Rating: 4/5
Over 2 years old and based on the Q2 engine what's the point? That is what many people are saying about the release of Sin for the Mac. Sin was terrible when it first came out on the PC, a buggy mess. Why bother bringing this loser to the Mac? Who cares right, why bother?
Well, you would be wrong in feeling that way. While Sin might not be the latest and greatest of FPS games, it is still damn good fun. We benefit from all the poor PC users' bug reports and we get the sleek version of the game. More importantly, it is a chance for those without a high end system to play something new and fun. The requirements are similar to those for Quake II. It is a pretty tight port, and so it is sometimes hard to believe that the game is based on the ageing Quake II engine. The game has a plot, and some pretty decent graphics considering its age. It looks much better than Quake II and has a much more realistic look about it.
The story centers around one nasty woman named, Elexis Sinclair and her company SinTek. In an attempt to make a better world she intends to mutate the entire planet and take it to the next level of evolution. Your job? Yep. Stop the mad cow before she turns the entire world into a freak show. Well, and of course have a good time along the way. While the game is fairly linear, there are several secret and side levels that allow you to extend you gameplay.
The game sports a few major nasties who will keep you on your toes throughout the game. What is more, Sin has one of the best darn intros ever. You begin by wielding a mini gun against terrorists who have taken over a bank, even better this mini gun is stuck on the side of a helicopter. Granted, it's a bit of a let down when you have to use your side arm once you land in the bank but it's a blast to start off.
For anyone who has played Deus Ex, there are some interesting similarities in the gameplay and storyline. The two games share the requirement to look at something and hit a key on the keyboard to pick something up. Some things are picked up automatically while others require a manual grab. There are several levels, where stealth is required rather than gunplay. One of which is impossible to finish untill you master the art of crouching and walking. Sin/WoS requires one to do a certain amount of hacking as well, both to eliminate annoyances such as turrets, to gain information and to open/close doors.
