E3 2007: Microsoft Keynote Disappointment - Page 2

Jeff Bell (Global VP of Marketing) never should be allowed on stage again, with a stuck up, corporate, poorly acted presentation about some upcoming Live titles that led into an obvious staged game of Madden 08 against NFL star Reggie Bush. The forceful push ribbing on the recent announcement about this year's football games running at a better frame rate than the PlayStation 3 versions was beyond annoying. His segment was easy to see through compared to the friendly and casual attitude Microsoft usually projects.

Halo 3 would end the show, with a spectacular trailer for the single player campaign. Hilariously, G4 watchers would actually have this cut off right in the middle for commercials even though they stayed with the overly long Call of Duty 4 and Assassin’s Creed play sessions without breaking.

The most impressive, and likely the most important discussion at this keynote where the numbers. The software attach rate for the Xbox 360 is well beyond the competition, and third party software is by far and away selling better on the Microsoft hardware. Granted, there’s a lot more of it out there and the console user base is larger, but the numbers still showed a dramatic 360 market share beyond that of console sales. The low number of Wii games purchased could easily destroy the hardware lead Nintendo currently holds if the numbers are dissected.

There’s little question Microsoft fans will have to look back to 2005 to come away with a feeling of disappointment that could equal this year’s pale, barren effort. That was the year the company paid the audience to react to their announcements amongst numerous broken promises, and they probably needed that this year. There was very little that was unexpected during this keynote, and the surprises were nothing spectacular.

Peter Moore needs a new tattoo every year. Period.
