Dear Miss Fatimah- You seem like a nice enough gal and all, but I'm somewhat less than entirely impressed with your recent silly talk about a "race war." The money quote of your 9-2-2008 Philadelphia Daily News column states "If McCain wins, look for a full-fledged race and class war.." Riiight.
The wicked Matt Drudge naturally picked up on this cheesy little comfortable middle-class fantasy of an uprising against The Man. I hope you sent the guy a fruit basket or something, especially after he has now featured your even sillier response column claiming that we've got us a race war going RIGHT NOW!!! He's made you sort of famous, at least for a few minutes.
But I got to say, in the strongest language I can legally use as a white male oppressor, Black person, puh-lease! This is a lot of foolishness.
We're certainly in a rough patch economically this year. Note that a good part of this comes from the subprime mortgage business, pushed on banks by politicians to get a lot of people of so-so means (especially minorities) into homes that they just can't afford. So there's some folks who are having to give up their overpriced homes and go back to renting, which is unfortunate.
Still, it's mostly not absolutely ruinous – unless you've invested your life savings into Fannie Mae or Lehman. But seems like that's mostly fat cats and such really getting boned there. It doesn't seem like this would really be that much of a big hit against the poor oppressed black folk living in the ghetto. The poor we will always have with us, as Jesus (the community organizing precursor to Obama) said. But in truth, even in the current rough economy even our poor folk are overall better off than they've ever been.
Anyway, you wrote this 9-2 column saying that we're looking at a "race war" if we don't elect the black guy president. Then you come back clucking your tongue and shaking your head in despair when you got some crappy emails – but wouldn't you have been much more disappointed if you had NOT gotten such a response? You come in talking a lot of black foolishness, as Ossie Davis would say as Da Mayor. Then you get a couple of hundred pieces of dumb hate mail – from among MILLIONS of Drudge readers and others – and cite that as evidence that basically the Klan is alive and well.
So, the race war is ON NOW! "We don't have to wait until after the election for a race war. We're in one now." Thanks for the heads up. Still, these columns and especially that "now" quote seem to me not so much persuasive evidence of racial strife as of your own spoiled bourgeois status that you would think this way – or that you could afford to.
I understand why there are still deep culturally embedded suspicions and hot points on race. It's only been in about the last 50 years or so that white America as a whole has really collectively tried to get on the side of the angels. In historical terms, that's the blinking of an eye.
Still, the situation has improved markedly enough that a black gal such as yourself can publicly indulge in fantasies of racial strife like this to grab some attention for your little newspaper column. If there really were anything like the level of racial strife that you fantasize about, you would not dare speak in such needlessly provocative terms – certainly not for the minor purpose of promoting traffic for your column.
For my part, I'm just happy that the situation in America has improved enough, even just in my lifetime, that someone like you can afford to indulge in such silliness with little to fear beyond getting a cussin' in your inbox. Heck, I get that every day – and that's just from my family. Do please understand though, that calling a handful of (carefully baited) hateful emails proof that we're in the middle of a "race war" is defining the term WAY down.Powered by Sidelines
