Fat loss is achieved by taking in less calories than one uses for activity and life functions. Effective exercise programs help to increase fat loss when following a lower calorie diet plan.

Fat loss is favorable over weight loss because it protects your lean body mass while shedding fat to increase your fat to lean mass ratios. Diets higher in protein coupled with resistance training are noted to spare muscle while encouraging fat loss. Measuring fat loss is not as easy as measuring weight loss. Body fat calipers are used in a lot of gyms to measure fat loss, however the most accurate way to measure fat loss would be with a DEXA scan.
