pole-pole festival Gent-Belgium 25th July 2004

Down in Jamaica, where Garvey comes from many groups and musicians started in the early seventies like the mighty Joseph Hill. But they are no where to be found today. Like the spirit of the Lord is upon Joseph Hill, for the past thirty years, nothing at all could stop him from spreading his message against war, oppression, crime, discrimination, poverty, racism, corruption and injustice. Last year 2003, he came out with “world peace” album seeking peace worldwide and rejecting war totally. On July 25th 2004, after performing live, he granted this interview to The Voice Magazine Belgian Correspondent.

TV: I have to call you Sir Joseph Hill. Let’s rally round Jehovah’s throne. I have some few questions to ask you today.

Joseph: You are welcome. (Then he smiled)

TV: It was in the seventies, I heard of Culture. Can you please tell what has inpired you to be in this hard music industry for all these years?

Joseph: It’s Jah (refering to God) that gives me the strength. Always feel that there is something in watchout. For my self, I love to play for the people. They are also part of my inspiration. These are what have inspired me through out these years.

TV: You have been singing all you life about corruption, oppression, war, poverty, discrimination, crime and so on. Were you a victim to such things in any circumstances?

Joseph: There are people I saw in comparison in various countries. Yes!yes!!yes!!! I have seen people die and not a word of justice is been said. Think of the person’s life. It is priceless. My last grief I had. There was this woman in Afghanistan, separated from the land. They treated her so bad that she and her child were eating grass.”G R A S S- grass”.(Joseph moved with sorrow spelt the word grass)

TV: Your lyrics and beats in every song of Culture, touches and moves every one on the road of trials and tribulations. Where do you get such wonderful rhythms and lyrics from?

Joseph: The big man that rules the earth. He is the governor.(He laughed)

TV: You were in Sierra Leone, when the war was at its peak, with brutal activities of the rebels. Did your visit created any impact or brought a change to the suffering masses?

Joseph: Yes, my visit brought a change. When the people saw me, they don’t know what to say. They just cried and cried. You know the rebels told the government that “You should be glad that Joseph is here. If you he wasn’t here this place would be destroyed within 24 hours. Imagine. I just came back from there few weeks ago”

TV: I learnt that at the capital Freetown, at the guest house you lodged, there is a tree nearby, and every morning a bird came to sing, and out of the song of the bird, you composed a song from it.

Joseph: Yes’ yes!! It is true.

TV:On July 4th 2004, I interviewed Lucky Dube, he told me that as a friend, you are one of the best men in the music industry. How do you react to this nice compliment?

Joseph: I take is easy. That’s all.

TV: I ask the same question any reggae artist I interview. Reggae music is loved by everyone. But why is it that the music is given less attention?

Joseph: Because the truth is God’s friend. But not a lot of people are friend of the truth.

TV: You are following the Palestinians and Israeli conflict for a very long time, and have even even visited the Gaza strip. Who do you think is the stumbling block to this peace everyone is seeking?

Joseph; Greed, greed, greed. Because there is enough to satisfy every man’s need but never enough to satisfy no man’s greed. So greed is the stumbling block.

TV: In one of your music, you played a song against Yasser Arafat, as the stumbling block.

Joseph: He made himself like that. He has to change his ways and the other man would change his ways. There is something called “Repentance”. When repentance meets their hearts, we shall have a beautiful world.

TV: You successfully came out last year with the remarkable “world peace” album. What message do you still have in mind for your numerous fans worldwide?

Joseph: You know people should respect one another. To be used, abused, refused and our hearts trampled by fear, and living in doubt, thinking we are living on top of the world. No we shouldn’t live that way. We have to seek happiness, love, mutual respect, joy and justice of God around us, and peace would find its rightful place.

TV: Thank you very much for this interview Sir Joseph Hill.

Joseph: Thanks be to Jah

  • Simon Mwila

I find Culture, and more so, Joseph Hill as the most thrilling raggae outfit since the days of the legendary Bob Marley. When one listens to songs like Behold, one feels the impact and effects of Joseph’s reverbating voice blending expertly with the stereo set-up of the instruments and the feminine backing vocals.
I always sit in my living room watching the South Africa concert and, the untiring Joseph Hill and his group are just the team.
    God Bless Culture.

  • ken

you are the best of the best as far as i am concerned. i will never forget you at kenya twice.S.Africa was great too av watched it.

My mommy always believed that no man is no sinner until she listened to the great councillor and the sinless, Hill’son.GLORY TO JAH THE PROFET HAS COME,and Joseph Hill is his name. I wish i could get all Culture’s Lyrics. They are just touching. If Jo. Hill could have been in every country there would be no war!

  • Yaw

If i had the ‘wings of a dove’,i would fly to see this man. Your teachings inspire me everyday. Jah bless culture

  • Prince Chukambiri

Mr Hill! your indeed a man. There are some other musicians who sing just for the sake of singing, but this is not the case with Mr Joseph Hill and his CULTURE. In our local language Chichewa i can call you NGUNGI or NGWAZI meaning somebody of great respect. Your music has transformed my entire life.
May The GOD Bless you with more Widsdom and Long Life.

  • Ras Mohula

Joseph Hill is one of the greatest reggae artists dat I know. I will always cherish de moment I n I spent with him in RSA, while he was touring with the Wailers and Burning Spear. It was one of the greatest reggae shows I have eva been too.

    Unity-Love-Peace!

  • http://YAHOOMAIL YEUKAI M GADZA

CULTURE, YOU ARE THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO REGGAE MUSIC

  • Pardon Kanhenga

I wish Joseph Hill could revist Zimbabwe and may be compose a song about or for it. Last time he was there I remember seeing pictures of Ijahman Levi, Eric Donaldson and him with our president Mugabe. What does he think of the man now and what did he think of him then?Zimbabweans love reggae to bits and a live album recording there will atone for the failure by Bunny Wailer to come and do as he had promised us.

It’s so painful. It’s so sad. It’s so heartbreaking. I’m down to the earth with sorrow. It’s so tragic. The Reggae world has been hit by yet another tragedy. I still doubt Joseph Hills’ death. I’ve been weeping all my heart out after hearing the tragic death of this talented musician of all time. His songs are inspirational, they teach lessons; he fights for the rights of the poor soul, especially’ of the African through his song.

We should all weep, for a great oak has fallen.

It is with immense sorrow I received the news of the death of Joseph Hill,I can`t believe brother Joseph Hill will never trod the earth again! Just saw him live at Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden 10 days before his untimely and shocking death, never imagined that would be my last concert with Joseph. Even though my heart is full of sorow, I am also thankful for the inspiration, love and upliftment he gave through his music, he was a true prophet who will be sorely missed by the reggae community worldwide. But his words and his legacy will live on, in my heart and in my life.
Thank you Joseph, for everything you so selflessly gave the world.
I know Jah will bless you, now that you`ve left this wicked world to go walk with Jah.
My heartfelt condolences to Pauline and her family and friends,Albert and Telford and the rest of the band.

  • Ras Kiway

I am not a happy man today as I heard and now realising the fact that the most cherished (at least by me and most reggae fans in Ghana) Joseph Hill has passed on. Chief J.H. is gone, but we take consolidation in the fact that the group (Culture)still remain committed to the ideals and the message that J.H. preached in his career. He led a good life, at least in the eyes of those who like the truth and the need for self-determination, individual freedom and liberty and against oppression. His message in “one stone” and “humble African” will continue to inspire those of us behind. In fact I am yet to listen to his latest, World Peace which i hope center on the need for togetherness at the world stage where discrimination and selfishness will be condenmed.I am convinced that Jah will definitely find a place for him and will be very close to past heroes including Bob Marley and the saints. Jah protects and guides us all.

Mi brother Joseph. Gone but still around. How did I know him? An inspiration, an educator and a deadly soldier on the battle front in the quest for peace, love and justice. A mouth piece for the poor and oppressed. He was able to take the bull by its horns. A sore in the eyes of the oppressors. Yes, that was Bro. Joe. Unfortunately he has gone at a time when he was needed most. Will be missed by the masses. There is a consolation, though. His death is not in vain. GOD grant you peace, mi brother.

i knew j. hill with his ‘one stone’ cd, especially a song “girls girls” in which he put a blame on them for cheating men by having alot of them- “one buoy in a london, one in a new york and one in a paris too” -goes part of the lyrics.

Rest n peace brother Joseph Hill. You left a legacy for us. From Marcus Garvey teachings – “there will be a brighter day for the upright people within themselves” (Wings of a dove)’ and to always give thanks & praises to the Most High. I named my first born son Joseph my brother as a tribute to your life on this planet. Jah bless

There are a lot of things in this life that we find difficult to understand. We try our BEST to find explanations to them though. We try to explain why our leader JOE had to go so soon. I cannot live through a day without listening to the words of this great prophet. I am most grateful to God for letting him do the works he did. I know he rests in the BOSOM of the Father in HEAVEN. Culture lives on.

joseph is the man for every reggae fan in my opinion and his music along with his husky voice blend so well that you can’t resist from turning up that volume key. so i urge you my brothers and sisters to lend an ear to the track “NO Segregation” from the last and latest culture album “World peace” listen carefully and hear a little of what the man was made of and get your mantallity on track and most importantly inspired. • Jallah , Liberia

when the sounds of culture begin, there is no holding back.i returned my reggae roots with the music of culture and got to know that most of the wonderful songs i have lived with were composed by the every creative human called Joseph Hill. Hill is no small name in the culture of africa. he never forgot his afican roots. he never forgot about the humbleness of the black man. as he has gone to join the other great minds , we still here will always be there to listen and adore the mind that made us happy to be what we are day in and day out. Jah Rastafari preserve thy people.fight down war and crime and build up righteousness.long live the name Hill, long live Africa, long live those that have done their part to lift the spirit of blackness.
