They Read Not A Word I’ve Written
Response Just The Echoes Of Their Minds

(With apologies to Harry Nilsson.)

I have become fascinated with comment sections, both mine and others. In the years I’ve written on the Web, I’ve noticed that maybe the first twenty or so comments might actually talk about something that the post contained. Then the discussion, such as it is, breaks down into personal slurs, revenge ad hominems, and several off-topic discussion threads – not to mention implanted robot ads which have nothing to do with anything.

In a previous Web incarnation, I once had a serious disagreement with the blogowner regarding this comment issue. I felt nothing was getting accomplished because of the side stuff. It cost me my access as an author, yet I soon found that many sites limit comments for the very reasons that I had used to block comments. I felt justified.

But what would YOU do? The World Wide Web wonders!

Making up more rules is not the answer.

But that’s only if you are lucky enough that people are interested in yur article in the first place. ;-)

I’ve seen really amazing articles get zero comments; I’ve seen others, not nearly as good, get dozens and dozens. Does any of it make sense? No.

I stand corrected. I’d edit the offending line if I had those permissions.

    Realist,

Don’t you want anyone to read and comment here anymore?

The threads are what make this site unique…take the interaction away and it’s a wordpress blog…
