Ron Jeremy has the unique distinction as being the world’s most famous star of adult cinema, having appeared in over 1,600 films. It’s an amazing body of work, even more so when you get a look at Ron Jeremy. He’s a chubby, short, middle-aged man, someone you wouldn’t expect to still be appearing in adult films — but yet he does. Ron Jeremy is an icon, and the film Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy gives us a look into the world of Ron Jeremy. It’s a fascinating and entertaining film about a man who really just wants to be loved.

Written and directed by Scott J. Gill, Porn Star gives us a peek into Jeremy’s life. It might surprise some that Jeremy has a Master’s degree in special education, and worked as a teacher in the 1970s. A girlfriend submitted a photo of Jeremy to Playgirl magazine in 1978, and his adult film career, and legend, followed.

We follow Jeremy as he travels around the country, attending various functions, conventions, and other public appearances to the delight of his legions of fans. As we get to know the man behind the legend, we learn that what Ron Jeremy really wants in life is to be accepted in mainstream Hollywood. Which doesn’t seem likely at this point, and one wonders why Jeremy is so determined to become a part of mainstream Hollywood. The truth is that Ron Jeremy is rich, well known, and adored by his fans.

Gill interviews Jeremy pals Al “Grandpa Munster” Lewis (who passed away on Feb. 3), Al Goldstein, publisher of Screw Magazine, Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt, as well as many current and former adult film stars. They paint a picture of a man who desires success (even though he has it) and riches (even though he has that, as well). Maybe Jeremy just doesn’t see it.

There does seem to be a great sadness to Ron Jeremy at times, almost a desperate need to be wanted. Perhaps it is a bit of a cliche that such a famous man could be so lonely, but that’s Ron Jeremy. We also learn that he’s a bit of a cheapskate — when he travels, he carries his belongings in large plastic garbage bags.

The film delves into the working world of adult films, and we follow Jeremy to a clinic for his monthly HIV screening, as he waits anxiously for the results. Jeremy still appears in films (he’s famous for…well, let’s just say a certain attribute ideal for the adult film industry) both in front of and behind the camera. Ron Jeremy may never cross over to mainstream success, but at this point in his career, he probably doesn’t need to.

Ron Jeremy comes across as a very likeable person. If the film has one failing it is the fact that we don’t explore in greater depth the obvious sadness behind Jeremy’s funny-guy screen persona. We catch some glimpses of it, especially in the segments where Jeremy talks about leaving the porn industry and craving the mainstream success that has eluded him.

Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy is an entertaining and provocotive film, giving us a glimpse into the life of a man who has been an industry legend for over 25 years. Highly recommended.

(Note: I reviewed the unrated version of the film; there is an R-rated version as well).

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but … I’ve seen this documentary (I think about two years ago or so). What struck me, more than anything else, was the sadness of his life. He seems to want, more than anything else, to be accepted as ‘mainstream’, and he will always be grasping at the fringes of the periphery.

Sad, too, was how his friends laughed at how ‘star-struck’ he was – wanting his photo taking with all of the ‘real’ stars. And, he had tons of photographs of him with so many people. He also kept that ratty, bulging notebook, scribbled with notes, and telephone numbers, and addresses of everyone he knew, and everyone he had ever met.

At a few times during the filming with him, you could see the sadness and regret he had about being alone. He had a difficult time talking about his first (I can’t remember if it was wife or long-term girlfriend), but he still had some major issues over her.

I have seen, read and heard that most of the adult film “actresses” that have worked with him over the years absoluted hated him, and many refused to work with him again. And, I can see where he could be an obnoxious pig (again from interviews, etc.) but, still, this documentary put a new perspective on him as someone other than the ‘larger-than-life’ (no pun intended) persona that we have all known over the years. He did teach Special Ed in the 70s before his girlfriend submitted his photo to PlayGirl. He had planned to pursue a legitimate acting career before that happened. Who knows where he may have ended up if not for that one photograph?
