Greetings Folks

This here, it gives me great orgasmic pleasure to announce, is one of the finest weeks for DVD in as far as I can be bothered thinking about. Simply put, a fella would need to re-mortgage his house in order to pick up everything essential in this week’s schedule. Not only are there a couple of must-have Universal collections, there’s also Eyes Without A Face and a fuckload of Godzilla sets to be getting on with.

Anyway, if you only buy four, then chances are you should pick up these four here.

Ed Wood – Special Edition

The Duke picked up the Region 1 Special Edition of this glorious masterpiece a couple years back, in a comic store in Belfast, no less. Turns out it was recalled, like, as soon as the first copies had sneaked out, so that disc became something of a collector’s item. Failing to capitalize on it, though, it’s back to being a plain old oddity now, since you folks can pick it up anywhere you damn-well choose now.

I coulda made a killing on the eBay, is the fact of the matter.

This has a handful of deleted scenes, a few rather wonderful featurettes, and a great commentary featuring everyone from Burton himself to cinematographer Stefan Czapsky. This is most likely the best flick of the 1990’s, and since we’re talking about a decade that saw not only Shawshank, Goodfellas and Trainspotting, but also Hard Target, that right there is an accolade fit to make a fella smile for a time.

Hellboy – Directors Cut

You may wanna throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care and say about “Motherfuck that Del Toro sonna bitch, I only just got the wrapper off the first disc!”, but that would be to ignore the fact that this three disc set not only has a whole shedload of new features, but also, he kinda told everyone this was gonna happen.

The Duke found Hellboy to be a visually stunning slab of throwing-things-about, and I’m intrigued as to what has been touched up and added and so on in this release.

The Wong Kar-Wai Collection – 5-Disc Set

No extras on this, far as I can tell, but five films from a damn genius is worth a handful of anyone’s green. This set stops short of In The Mood For Love, and so what we get are As Tears Go By, Days Of Being Wild, gay drama Happy Together, hitman fantasy-type affair, Fallen Angels, and the much-loved Chunking Express.

The Ultimate Oliver Stone Collection

Here’s another overview of a director’s career, although how it has the heart to ignore Michael Caine schlock-fest The Hand is beyond me. What it does have, though, are a couple of Stone’s student films, a bunch of commentaries and featurettes, and Directors Cuts of both the masterful JFK and Al Pacino shout-fest Any Given Sunday. The other films spread across these 14 discs are; Salvador (1986), Platoon (1986), Wall Street (1987), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989), Talk Radio (1989), The Doors (1991), Heaven And Earth (1993), Natural Born Killers (1994), Nixon (1995) and U-Turn (1997).

The set also includes the hour-long interview, Oliver Stone’s America, which appeared on the earlier, much-less comprehensive collection.

Well, here’s the full run-down for Tuesday October 19th

The Duke SaysFantastic kids-flick from 85 featuring Ethan Hawke in his filmic debut. River Phoenix also stars, as three kids attempt to cobble together a space craft from a load of old toss lying about the place. Great to see this back on the shelves, is what.

Eyes Without a Face (1959)
Studio: Home Vision
Rated: Not Rated
The Duke SaysStunning, haunting and beautifully surreal horror flick from Georges Franju. This nightmarish French classic tells of a plastic surgeon kidnapping young girls so as to perform horrific medical procedures, in the hope of restoring the beauty of his tragically disfigured daughter. Beyond essential.

Godzilla 3-Pack
3-DVD Set
Studio: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
Rated: PG-13
The Duke SaysFirst of three Godzilla packs this week, this one includes Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs Hedorah and Godzilla, although I’m not sure if it’s the Roland Emmerich number or the original Japanese affair.

Godzilla 5-Pack
5-DVD Set
Studio: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
Rated: PG-13
The Duke SaysThis second one features the films mentioned above, but adds Godzilla 2000 and the classic Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla 7-Pack
7-DVD Set
Studio: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
Rated: PG-13
The Duke SaysAnd lastly, this features Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, as above, but adds Godzilla vs Destroyah, Godzilla vs Space Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mothra, Godzilla vs King Ghidora, Godzilla vs Monster Zero and Godzilla vs Megarius. Phew. The green motherfucker will be knackered after all that, I’m guessing. Probably best to bypass the 5-disc number and grab this alongside the 3-disc set.

Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry (2004)
Studio: Wellspring

Greg the Bunny (2004)
2 Disc Set
Studio: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
Rated: Unrated
The Duke SaysApparently this sitcom about a world were puppet bunny things hang around with humans and no one even notices, most likely, was one of the highest grossing shows of the year. Due to a load of behind-the-scenes hoopla at Fox, though, it got kicked the motherfuck out, languishing in some filthy pile of filth. Joy, then, that this Seth Green starring affair can be re-evaluated and so on by way of this features-heavy DVD. Hooray!

Ice Cream Man (1995)
Studio: Ardustry Home Entertainment
Rated: R
The Duke SaysNorman Apstein helms this gloriously daft slasher concerning a young fella who witnesses the death of “The Ice Cream King”, and so, upon waking up one morning to discover that he’s grown up and stuff since then, he decides the thing to do is become a serial-killing Ice Cream Man. Inspired.

Intermezzo (1939)
Studio: MGM Home Entertainment
Rated: Not Rated
The Duke SaysIngmar Bergman gets her first English language role in this flick about a bunch a the love and so on blossoming between a couple violinists.

Intermission (2004)
Studio: MGM Home Entertainment
Rated: Not Rated
The Duke SaysIrish Flick In Worth Watching Shock! Following hot on the heels of The Magdalene Sisters, we get another above-average film about folks who are all Irish and so on. This is a comedy drama type thing, which manages to be very funny and shockingly matter-of-fact regarding the violent tendencies of the characters, characters played by the likes of Colin Farrell and Colm Meany, amongst others.

The Invisible Man: The Legacy Collection (1933)
2-Disc Set
Studio: Universal Studios Home Video
Rated: Not Rated
The Duke SaysExcellent set for to sit alongside the similar releases concerning Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman, this flings James Whale’s wonderful 1933 original alongside all four of the proper sequels; The Invisible Man Returns (1940), The Invisible Woman (1940), The Invisible Agent (1942) and The Invisible Man’s Revenge (1944). Also, they slap on a commentary from Film Critic Rudy Belhmer, so there ain’t really a solitary excuse to miss this, I’m afraid.

Please Hammer, Hurt ‘Em!: Fred Williamson 2-Pack (1975)
Studio: RED Distribution
Rated: R
The Duke SaysNothing to do with popular recording artiste MC Hammer, nor indeed Mondo Irlando’s very own MC Hammer PHD, this pack in fact relates to the work of Fred “The Hammer” Williamson, hero of any number of Blaxploitation classics, several of which are included here. These two discs manage to cram in not only all three flicks in the Black Cobra series, but also Death Journey from 1975, Mean Johnny Barrows from 76, and Deadly Impact from 1984.

Van Helsing (2004)
Ultimate Collector’s Edition
Studio: Universal Studios Home Video
Rated: PG-13
The Duke SaysWell here’s a Collector’s Edition fit to bear the title. Regardless of the worth of Stephen Sommers overblown CGI fest, there just ain’t a lick of arguing to be done with this set. Not only does it have two commentaries for the main feature, but alongside the plethora of featurettes and so on, there are the original Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931) and Wolfman (1941) flicks. That’s pretty decent, is what The Duke would suggest, even if it does baffle the fuck out of a fellas taste-glands to think about how anyone could package the work of James Whale and Todd Browning with the fun-but-vacuous antics of Mr Sommers.

The Godzilla pack contains the Emmerich “version.”

Now, the Godzilla 2000 in the other set was SUPPOSED to have the original Japanese version on side 2, but it was scrapped at the last minute. The first release back when the movie was intially released was said to have it as well. G-fans are getting screwed into buying the same disc twice.

thanks for the info, Matt. that’s a shame right there. Whilst i don’t think Emmerich’s version is anywhere near as bad as some would have us belive, it’s fairly ridiculous to have it on here at the expense of the original.

In other news, in the comment under the Greg The Bunny bit, it should obviously be “Highest rated” as opposed to “Highest grossing”, on account of we’re dealing with the telly and all.

The original G is already on DVD 3 times. Once more would be wee bit redundant. Still, it shouldn’t be the American G either. Plus, there may be a Criterion edition of the Japanese version (the “real” original) next year.

I have one thing to say: Everyone needs to get the Arrested Development DVDs. If you can’t fork out the cash, put it on your Christmas list, ask Hannukah Harry, whatever, just get this set – it’s easily the funniest thing on TV in a long time.

I have to second recommending “Arrested Development” for many reasons, a great cast, completely dead-pan writing, and brilliant guest casting (Liza Minnelli, Henry Winkler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and as himself, Carl Weathers), and most importantly, you get more on each viewing.

I suspect “Arrested Development” is even better when watched in extended sittings. If you haven’t seen it, I would say it is similar to Christopher Guest’s “mockumentaries” such as “Waiting for Guffman”, “Best In Show” and “A Mighty Wind”, and just as funny.

As for “Greg the Bunny”, it also features Eugene Levy and it is very, very funny.

thanks fellas, il make a point of inspecting Arrested Development. You’ll have to excuse the duke’s ignorance of a whole lot of telly from across the water, given that i live in The Northern Ireland, jsut to the left of england, in case you were wondering, and therefore don’t get to see the whole lot of american or canadian telly.
greg the bunny, too, i will investigate.
Thanks for the heads up, folks.
And here’s one for you, although its not mentioned here on account of i only saw it yesterday – British telly show Little Britain is one of the funiest things i’ve saw in a long time, as good as the office or phoenix nights. if you get a chance, investigate!
