Cagney & Lacey is police procedural drama series that premiered on CBS in October, 1981. The series ran for a seven seasons until it went off the air in May, 1988. Set in a Manhattan police precinct, it starred Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as two female New York City police detectives. Christine Cagney (Gless) was a single, career woman. Mary Beth Lacey (Daly) was a married, working mother.
Cagney & Lacey was noted for addressing women’s issues, many of which had had never before been dealt with on television of that time. Sexuality, equal pay for women, sexual harassment, domestic violence, rape, incest, and breast cancer were some of the issues explored in the series. The controversial nature of some of the show’s themes often brought the show’s producers under fire from CBS’ standards and practices powers.
