Dex Romweber Duo Play Devil’s Music In New Music Video

With his imposing voice and presence, pardon me, but how the hell did we miss Dex Romweber? Watch the music video posted below for his song “People, Places and Things” off the 2009 Dex Romweber Duo album Ruins of Berlin. Shooting out of the gloom, his bellowing voice slams into your head like a giant railroad spike.

North Carolina-based Dex led the influential two-piece The Flat Duo Jets in the ’80s. He remained a cult icon, brushing only briefly with the major labels. After a short solo career, he formed this new guitar and drum group with older sister Sara. She’s his real one, unlike Meg White of The White Stripes. Sara’s sat behind the drum kit for few indie groups, and has actual chops. Sara is also nice to look at, which is a bonus.

Fans of The White Stripes and rockabilly-influenced punk bands will uncover a pissed-off old soul in Dex. Fans of ’50s music will appreciate the mistiness of his doo-wop and surf music. Like I did, the Winnipeg Sun noticed that Dex’s musical style makes the perfect Quentin Tarantino soundtrack.

Watching the video you realize he’s not the smoothest or most sophisticated person, especially in the beginning. He addresses an off-screen crew member as “buddy.” Dex doesn’t dress like a “greaser,” but his music is head-to-toe legit and he plays guitar as if exorcising demons from his own body.

Witness the second coming of Dex as The Dex Romweber Duo begins touring on January 26. They’ll be playing with Exene Cervenka of the legendary punk band X. Though recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she’s still rocking. Definitely, don’t miss either one of them.

There’s an eerie Johnny Cash quality to his voice.

Wonderful song. I first checked out the Flat Duo Jets a few months back, on youtube – mainly because Jack White thinks so highly of Dex and was working with him on a single. (Through White’s label, Third Man Records.)

I was really impressed with what he was doing back then — really raw and potent, probably the best thing I’ve heard and seen next to Jack White. I wasn’t sure if Dex still had the magic, but it sure sounds like he does. Now I really want this album.
