I’ve skimmed the new releases for the week and there are some high profile releases.  I’m planning to ignore those to focus on a couple of titles that will likely escape mainstream attention.  You are cordially invited as always to scan the list and offer up the titles on your radar.  With that, here are my targets for the week:

Dan Wilson
Live At The Pantages

Depending on your age, you’ll remember Dan Wilson for one of his two bands (Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic) or you might not know him at all.  You should, though.  He’s a terrific songwriter who has written great songs for those two bands, for a solo album far too know about, and also collaborated with Dixie Chicks, Carole King, and many others.  I had the privilege of interviewing Dan a couple years ago about that solo record Free Life as well as his work with Dixie Chicks on their Grammy-winning album.  He was gracious with his time and offered much insight into his work.

Live At The Pantages is a digital double-live album.  Wilson opens the show solo acoustic and is joined by former Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic bassist Jon Munson and others for the second, offering a more rock-oriented sound.  The set list draws from his entire career, making it something of an unofficial retrospective.

Rusty Willoughby
Cobirds Unite

I previewed a track from this record not long ago and now at long last the album is available!  Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rusty Willoughby has crafted a terrific batch of new songs and then put out the call to some very talented friends (Barrett Martin, Rachel Flotard among them) to help give those songs to life.

Grady Champion
Back In Mississippi Live At The 930 Blues Café

One of this year’s International Blues Challenge winners, Grady Champion, has secured distribution for his live album and this marks his move to capitalize on last year’s win.  It’s fitting that his introduction to many blues fans will come in the form of a live record as it was live performance that earned him first place in the band category at IBC in Memphis.
