Art, from the beginning, has expressed the conflict between a controlled environment and subject and the ever-present need to push the envelope. Art, especially nude art, enlightens, enrages, enriches, entices, and explores. It challenges the audience to not only come to terms with the artwork, but to come to terms with themselves, as humans. This process, however, is usually personal with the occasional interaction between audience and artist. Often the person who is the model is left behind when the work is done.
Nude models still play an important role in society, however. This is because they’re the medium. The purpose of art is to comment to the society about the society. And the person who’s curious enough to test nudity for art or who's determined enough to find an identity in nudity, speaks a lot and loudly for a society. They’re saying they make and define their own limitations and are often willing to defy them, even if their society isn’t ready for such defiance.
