We held a little memorial gathering at Elle's home later the same day. Attended by those family members present, her religious leaders, and some local friends who had adopted her, a few verses were read from the Bible. Some remembrances were shared about Elle, and as a parting gesture to her memory, we toasted her — with cups of Dr. Pepper.
After I post this, we are returning to the chores of the surviving family. We are gathering one more time to co-mingle her ashes with those of her dearly departed husband of almost forty years, and then take the combination to scatter them in a favorite location. We hope it rains so that their ashes can immediately soak into the soil and become one with nature as quickly as possible. It looks like that will happen for us. Then we can return to our normal routines, which for me will be to take up the commentary cudgels and wade into the fray once again.
Auntie Elle would have approved.
