Tom Cruise & Kate Holmes, real or fake relationship?

Something bothered me about seeing Tom Cruise and Katey Holmes broadcasting their fledgling "relationship" to all the world. It wasn't just the age considerable age difference. Something about them didn't look right.

Then a tabloid wrote that they were just faking this to garner publicity for their upcoming film projects, and it sounded right. If this was a mutually agreed upon hoax, it made more sense.

What do you think: is the Tom Cruise/Kate Holmes thing real or a hoax? Maybe they even did it to help Brad Pitt out. Maybe it's their sense of humor.

I don't think Cruise has ever had a relationship which wasn't about publicity.

    (The following is opinion)
He married Mimi Rogers when she was the more famous one. He married Nicole Kidman because he was the more famous one but he could see her star was rising. (Then she got a little too successful. Penelope Cruz was because he had to keep fending off the gay rumors. And Katie Holmes is an effort to be relevent again.

One of the weekly rags had a photo of KH with obvious herpes all over her lips.

If this is a fake relationship (which it very well could be), then one of them is taking quite a chance, considering that herpes can be transmitted via kissing...

Thanks for weighing in. Personally, I don't think Tom Cruise is gay and I didn't mean to imply that. I hadn't thought of his previous relationships as being opportunistic but I guess I see how that could be thought. He dumped both wives just at the ten year mark to try to get out of paying more alimony. He terminated Nicole Kidman without notice.

Most of the gossip blogs that I go to (which contain a few people who work in Hollywood, a lot of screenwriters) consider Katie Holmes, Penelope Cruz and Tara Reid as professional beards.

I think the relationship is legit. Those who are hysterical about are being forced to buy tickets to see Cruise and Holmes are the silver screen.

I don't think Cruise is gay at all. Brad Pitt? Yes.

I don't think Cruise is gay at all. Brad Pitt? Yes. Pitt wants to adopt kids, according to a recent interview, and he never got his ex-wife pregnant. That makes him gay, too. Right?

I have a buddy who was at a benefit with Mr. Cruise. According to him, Cruise was all over the well endowed women that evening. That means he's at least a little bit straight.

As for the relationship with Holmes, who cares? If it's real, more power to them. If it's fake, the publicity stunt is working well.

There's people who wish Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were gay, but I just don't see that at all.

I think Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers were real relationships, although they had their convenient aspects. Tom was also with Heather Locklear before that.

I wish I could get a hold of Brad Pitt.

I've never heard of the Brad Pitt rumors, but I think in the case of Tom, it's a matter of protesting too much. Most celebrities, when a tabloid speculates on orientation, or when rumors get started, just say 'No, I'm not, but I love all my fans', or something to that effect.

Tom drags out lawyers, demands retractions, puts out press releases, dates women with no similarities, and is very insistent that you KNOW he's straight. I could care less personally, I don't think he's that good of an actor.

People react differently to being lied about. Some take umbrage, some let it go.

Update: journalists were asking Tom Cruise why he is being so open about this relationship when he was so secretive about the others. First of all, it's wierd when even celebrity journalists are looking their gift horse in the mouth. That that question even got asked is telling. Tom said that it was because "this woman is magnificent" and he loved her. O.K. yes, Katey Holmes is magnificent, but not any more than Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Mimi Rogers or Heather Locklear, for God's sake.

What exactly is a professional "beard"?
I've honestly never heard the term used
before. Is this something to do with the
    tabloids or gossip columns?

  • 19 - Nicolette Rivers

A beard is someone who dates or weds a gay person in order to create the illusion that they are straight. They are a cover.

HW, a beard is someone who is masquerading as someone's date to cover up their real relationship, usually a gay one. I don't exactly know what a professional beard would be. Whatever they are, I've never especially felt that those women qualified, although I don't really know.

My guess is that a PROFESSIONAL beard would be someone who was willing to do it more than once and use it to advance their own career.

Thanks for the answers.I had never heard
that term used before.I'd guessed it may
have had something to do with helping
someone cover up something but you never
know.I make it a point to avoid scandal
    rags.

"Cruise was all over the well endowed women that evening. That means he's at least a little bit straight."

In most cases, perhaps, but that statement is not always or necessarily true.

I hope it's a sham; Ms. Holmes could do so much better. If it isn't, someone needs to talk with her about the danger of rebound romances -- especially highly public ones.

Whether the relationship is real or not, and whether Cruise is gay or not, I at least hope they follow the charade to her hometown of Toledo. My boyfriend's parents live two blocks from hers, and frequently see her jog past when she's home.

You can bet my pseduo-mother-in-law and I will have our lawn chairs parked and waiting this summer.

UPDATE: TOM CRUISE AND KATEY HOLMLES APPEAR ON OPRAH 5/23/05

If you saw it, what did you think?

Tom literally jumped on Oprah's couch a dozen time out of exurberance in his love for Katey, he said. Katey was backstage. Tom was even more hyper and edgy than I've ever seen him, and he always made me uncomforable before because of those qualities. It just didn't look likely. Who jumps on a couch a dozen times to demonstrate their love during a talk show interview? In the pictures and video that I've seen of the couple they do look like a couple about a sixth of the time, the rest of the time they look like fellow actors. That's just weird. I wrote before, Ms. Holmes is beautiful, intelligent and talented but he's had all of that before. Oprah was looking like she bought it but even she asked just what it was about Katey and their relationship that had gotten him that way. He really didn't have a convincing answer, and in fact, looked like he was trying to pull something, to me.

As I've said before, I don't think Tom Cruise is gay. I've never seen any evidence of that. I just don't buy this stuff at all.

He has a Spielbergian blockbuster out at the end of June he was plugging. Did Spielberg say, "Hey, Tom, you know the studio's income is flagging and we really need to make some money, can you do anything for us?" That sounds farfetched. Does Tom Cruise need even more money than the multi-millions he has? Not in any sane person's eyes.

I just don't what's at the heart of this mystery.
