The Secret of Creativity

This is not a theory I am trying to propagate. These are real life observations and analyses I’ve derived from my experiences. Barring exceptions, what I’ve realized is that if we allow ourselves, everyone of us can sing, dance, paint, compose a song or a piece of poetry, or play a musical instrument. To be precise, every one of us can become involved in any forms of creative art.

The irony is such that people conclude too early in their life, and this conclusion acts as the sole barrier for them in realizing and cherishing the beautiful gifts life has bestowed in each of its elements.

How beautifully the cuckoo sings and the peacock dances! Have you ever heard just a single cuckoo sing or seen just one peacock dance? Similarly, if one human can sing, dance, paint or compose, why can’t the other humans, too? But we conclude too early in our life. We think such gifts are bestowed only to a few talented and gifted ones. Perhaps this conclusion of ours remains a barrier throughout our life, hindering us from making a single attempt.

People ask me, “How can you compose, write lyrics, sing, or paint and do so many other things?” I reply, “Even you can.” Seldom have they agreed, although there are a few friends who have comprehended my message and begun to realize their potential.

Yesterday, my chum Fahad was telling me he has begun writing a few lyrics and composing a few songs, and that he would like to pen at least a few more lyrics and compose a few more songs. I was delighted and pleased to realize this change in him and asked, “Why just a few? Why not some hundreds, or if possible, even thousands?” He nodded. Perchance he was becoming aware of his potential.

Whenever you involve yourself in some form of creative arts, I ask you to remember a few things. Please refrain from all kinds of emulative attitudes. You should be able to enjoy whatever you create. A peacock simply enjoys his dance and in the same way, a cuckoo enjoys his song. They aren’t bothered as to whether their song or dance will be world famous or hit the charts.

Similarly, when you write, forget about the Booker Prize. When you paint, forget about making it to some gallery in Paris; and when you sing, forget about MTV or the Billboard charts. If these ambitions are the objective behind your creativity, it means you are not creating for the sheer pleasure of creating. It means you are creating for name, fame and money, which could have been achieved by other means. I am not saying you should not become world-famous or achieve laurels, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if these attributes came about as a byproduct of your creativity, rather being the objective?

Yes, Yes! Hopefully we will all embrace more of our true potential because there is enough creativity for every thirst and enough for every vessel.

    Hey CoolDeep,
I really enjoyed your article. Creativity is an awesome phenomenon. I started collaging several years ago and am amazed at what I have created, all from my unconscious. Kudos to you for reminding us about that wellspring that lives within us!

As a practicing artist and writer, I celebrate the joy of creating and have the sincere desire that all of humanity recognize its creative gifts. These gifts come in all shapes, sizes and disciplines and are certainly not limited to the cultural arts such as theatre, dance, the written word to name a few. To be creative is to be in touch with something greater than yourself, that excites you, that makes you curious, that feeds a vision, that serves you in your self expression.

Creativity is expressed by cooking, by making furniture or building a business. or painting a picture. Creativity is an energy supported by loving about yourself so strongly that its expression matters to you. It is what makes you feel alive and in love with life. It doesn't matter what you do, only that you do it.

    Hello VQL,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I am aware of the various fragments of creativity you have pointed out. And I agree with what you have said.

Yes, it doesn't matter what you do; that may be even brooming... But yes, with passion... with a vigor passion

    Love,
