The Holidays: Is That All There Is?

In the immortal words of John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) just before the Sex Pistols walked off stage after performing only one song at a US concert:

Ever feel like you've been cheated?

Ever stood on line to see a movie that got four star reviews and fallen asleep in the theatre from sheer boredom? Ever dined in an expensive restaurant and discovered that the restrooms were filthy and had no soap? Ever gone to a concert you'd been looking forward to and found your mind wandering off in the middle of it, wishing that you'd stayed home watching bad TV shows instead? Ever bought the latest CD by a cool band you'd "discovered" and realized they've sold out?

When anticipation doesn't live up to reality, you have two options. You can either be honest about it, or you can try to convince yourself that you're having a great time anyway. Let's face it: if you're visiting New York from another part of the country or the world and you spend one to two hundred bucks a pop to see some overrated Broadway musical monstrosity, are you really going to admit to yourself that it totally sucked? If you go to New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and wind up in the hospital after a giant M and M balloon goes haywire, are you going to complain or cheerfully say you'll be back next year? (Personally, I think the two women who got injured last year should have sued the city, Macy's, and M and M's, but that's just me. Instead, I believe they actually came back this year for more. This year, they kept the balloons low-flying.)

The sad fact is that my boyfriend BG and I are getting old(ish) and jaded. Between the two of us, we've developed PTSD from too many disappointing outings over the years. And as a result, although we live in "glam-packed" New York City, at this point we lead what most people would consider to be very boring lives. But we've often joked about the futility of running around trying to have a good time even if it kills us.

Some of this inertia, of course, is due to the fact that BG and I don't always agree on what constitutes a good time. I love to eat out. BG was a cook for many years, and now prepares nothing more complicated than hot dogs and hates anything more high class than Wendy's. I'd love to see some off-off-Broadway plays; BG would rather get knitting needles inserted in his eyes. I love Law and Order; BG would rather watch the lamest movie rerun than sit through one episode.

How do I really feel when it's all over? .... to be honest, really f.cking relieved. Except when the bank statements and credit card bills start dropping in the letterbox.

My wife always takes the tree and the outside Christmas lights down. My favourite day of the year is the one when I come home from work and they're no longer there, because it means everything is officially back to normal ... or as normal as things get at our place.

"Personally, I hate hearing Christmas carols for a month straight. I hate the endless Christmas commercials. If I never hear the phrase "home for the holidays" again it will be too soon. How many people travel halfway across the country, getting stranded at airports in the snow, to see relatives they don't really like anyway? Let's face it, family life is not always Little House on the Prairie, now is it?"

I lived in Minnesota for twenty years and I do not miss Christmas one bit. I don't miss the forced good cheer, the alienation, the stupid arguments over maybe having Jewish holiday decorations, not to mention the credit card bills in the mail...

And there are so many "holidays" here that it is hard to get worked up over any of them too much. If you miss taking the bus to visit someone for one of them, another rolls around in a month or two...

    Happy Hannukkah, Elvira

The worst thing is the fact we are all supposed to be happy in the bosom of our family. I know far too many people whose families are so toxic that they make the Love Canel look like a resort. How do you think they feel when every time they turn around they see a happy family on television or another Norman Rockwell moment in a comercial.

That's the worst hole to try and fill, the one where you feel like there's something wrong with you because you don't have a family to go to on Christmas. That's why so many people see this time of year as the last straw.

I hope that everybody has somebody they can spend the next few weeks with who makes them happy.

    cheers

Elvira, I laughed all the way through this! Too good!
Years ago, when my little girl was about five or so, Cabbage Patch dolls made the big time and the wife decided Sis had to have one. We went to St. Louis on a Saturday (bad idea #1) and ended up at South County Mall (bad idea #2) in search of the elusive CP doll.
I would rather swallow boiling lye and wash it down with a Miller Lite (dogshit in a can) than go shopping, especially at that time of year.
We eventually found a CP for the girl, after Vickie impersonated Mr. Wrestling #2 to procure one from the mob and were headed (thank you, Jesus) for the exit when a rather large woman stuck her arm in our cart and tried to kidnap Evette Manuela (the doll).
What did I do? I'd just wasted a perfectly good day of my life and I wasn't in the mood to put up with any bullshit, so I slapped that woman's hand and asked what the fuck she thought she was doing? I think I actually said, "why you lardass bitch, get the fuck out of my cart!"
She looked shocked and then took off, without the doll, thank God! I think I'd have taken her fat ass down if she had.
God, the memories of the silly things we do for our kids at Christmas. lol.

    STM:

What's really depressing to me though is seeing all the discarded, dried up trees and the pine needles strewn all over the hallways from people dragging them out. That's why if I do put up a tree, I go fake all the way, baby!

    Ruvy:

Yes, there certainly are a lot of Jewish holidays--I could never keep track of them all, though my aunt likes to give me a little Jewish calendar every year so I can see what I'm missing.

Happy Hanukkah to you and yours--hope things are well.

    Richard:

How true--there's lots of folks who have had to survive dysfunctional families, and this time of year can be very painful indeed. But as you say, if you are with someone you love, that's the important thing.

Man, I would have bitch-slapped that bitch myself. I think in situations like these our true competitive/territorial instincts come to the fore, and things can get pretty ugly. It's kinda like cavemen fighting over the best piece of meat.

Same ... i have learned my lesson. Just gets way too messy (yes, we do have real Chrissy trees here).

    S.T.M.:

They just had an item on the news about how flammable Christmas trees can be if you don't keep them well watered. The fire dept set up two trees--one that was fresh and the other that was beginning to dry out. The first one was very hard to set on fire, but the second burst into flames like dry timber in a few seconds. So yes, messy for sure--and potentially dangerous.
