The Doe Network

There is a site on the internet that functions as a kind of terrible lost and found. Mostly lost.

doenetwork.org.

I first happened on this site two years ago and sat for the better part of a night reading it's pages. It's a compendium of the damned. A roll call of the missing. It makes for a haunting journey. Haunting and sad.

There is the case of Mitchel Weiser and Bonita Bickwit.

On July 27, 1973 Weiser, and his girlfriend, Bonita Bickwit planned to hitchhike to Watkins Glen, NY for an Allman Brothers-Grateful Dead concert.

Weiser met Bickwit at Camp Wel-Met in upstate Narrowsburg, where she worked as a mother's helper. They set off for the concert, which was 75 miles from their location; neither has been seen since.

It was still a turbulent time, the early 1970's. And the kind of crowd attending an Allman Brothers-Dead concert back then would have had it's share of weirdos. There is an unconfirmed story that she drowned and he did too, trying to save her...but it's probably not true.

Then there's the case of Jody Brant. Jody was driving from her home in Lawrenceville Georgia to visit family in Michigan. At some point she called her family and said she was lost. That was the last they heard from her. Later her car was found, burned, in Erie, Ohio. If you look at the picture you see a pretty All-American type who surely would have drawn attention on the road.

From all the way back in 1965 there's the truly disturbing case of Mary Shotwell Little . From the site:

...(in Little's car) They also found blood in several places. The blood was on the driver's door near the handle, on the inside window of the passenger's side and smeared over the vinyl of the front seats. A few grass clippings were stuck in dried blood where the passenger's head would have rested. Also found in the car, carefully rolled together and placed between the seats, was a set of women's undergarments, a girdle, slip, and panties that had tiny drops of blood on them. On the floorboard lay a black bra and a section of stocking that had been cut neatly. Tests indicated the blood probably was Little's. The undergarments definitely were hers and had been worn recently. The car was also littered with dozens of other items, including Coke bottles, a package of Kent cigarettes (Little's brand) and four bags of groceries.

The solution to the disappearance of Mary Shotwell Little has been posted on the Internet.

Key to the solution is that two women disappeared not one. Both used the same desk in that bank office.

Most people are unaware that design engineers discovered a conflict of physiology in the 1950's when workers using newly designed close-spaced workstations began having bizarre or psychotic episodes. The problem was peripheral vision reflexes and the solution in the business office by the 1960's was the Cubicle.

The problem is one of physiology related to subliminal sight not desks and chairs. (Vision Startle Reflex) Although you can ignore Peripheral Vision Reflexes you cannot stop subliminally seeing movement that triggers them. You cannot tell your brain to stop trying to create and force the reflexes. The phenomenon can happen anytime and anywhere the conditions to create it exist.

Hill and Shields were exposed and had similar episodes. Both began to say and do strange things before each disappeared two years apart.

These episodes have not stopped happening. Today with Cubicles in use in business offices College Students are one at-risk group. They don't know that if a workstation where they will study or use a computer is located in a room with repeating detectable movement, Cubicle Level Protection must be designed into that workstation.

When I contacted the Cold Case Officer, Atlanta PD, about this solution he remembered that the Atlanta Police Department had problems with the old open-room unprotected-desk system before they installed Cubicles.

You can see the old office system any night on episodes of "Law and Order," "NYPD Blue," or "Barney Miller."

Neither the Bank or Authorities were aware of this phenomenon at the time.

Little may still be alive. Victims of Dissociative Fugue sometimes have amnesia of the previous identity and life.

    College Student disappearances:

Ahmad Arain computer science major UCLA found in Mexico in an altered mental state.

Maura Murray disappeared after having a mental event in front of witnesses. The witnesses did not detect that. She damaged two cars in about two days, disappeared and has not been seen since.

Amy Bradley graduated college, went on a cruise and disappeared as the ship was preparing to dock. There have been two sightings of her but she is still missing.

Suzanne Lyall disappeared within 200 yards of her dorm room at the University at Albany. Her ATM card was used to withdraw $20 but there have been no sightings since.

Joseph Morse disappeared from Georgia Tech the morning of finals and was photographed at an ATM withdrawing his last cash. This summer his body was located. He had died in Miami the next day after he disappeared from Atlanta.

The Everquest Connection page explains the psychology and relates it to MMORPG players. Shawn Woolley's mother sued Sony believing that Everquest addiction cause his suicide.

Mr. Tucker: I have seen this post from you on multiple missing person sites. While I believe the disassociative fugue state may be the cause of some of the disappearances, they most certainly are not the cause of most- just a tiny percentage. There are bad people in this world, Mr. Tucker, who do evil things. I know it may be comforting to believe most of the missing people just have amnesia, but that's not reality.
