Just to clear this for you, if you make your 'brown note' recordings into MP3s then it'll get cut off anyway, mp3s compress by cutting everything that naturally can't be heard, including everything under 20hz.

I can't believe how many idiots can't seem to figure out that YOU CAN'T REPRODUCE THIS ON YOUR PC. I know approximately dick about sound waves and whatnot, yet this is so very clear to me! What are you not comprehending? In the words of Mr. Slave "Jesus Christ!"

As MP3 no it won't work. as an .ogg file, it does. I only have creative 5.1 speakers, but when using Audacity with a rap song (black eyed peas - pump it), i dropped the frequency to 7 Hz, then saved as .ogg, played it back. didn't exactly shit myself, but i did feel extremely light headed and my heart was pounding, as well as my stomach bothering me somewhat.

is there any way to re-create it on a mac- ibook?

While you can possibly CREATE the sound on a computer, the fact is you're going to need some pretty awesome subwoofers to produce it at a volume which will actually affect anything. the likelihood that your computer will play it back with all necessary components, or that you will be able to reproduce it on transportable media is very slim.

it will probably take a fleet of alien spacecraft to actually send it amplified through the air

Once upon a time.... what about the black note. In ages gone by, the great mystics new the power of sound. The power to control, the power to pursuad, and the power to anniliate in a manner that could not be traced. Scary it may be.

there is also the matter of conveying the sound - it would destroy almost any equipment through which it was transmitted

I should let you all know that you can reproduce the brown note with a pair of professional subwoofers. A lot of loudspeakers that specify their frequency range are at the db input level of -3db to 0db. If you took about 30db off of the input level, the subwoofers range will be incredibly increased. Try inputting the note at about -30db to -40db and THEN see what happens.

Now creating the frequency? That's a different matter... It's a case of trial and error.

Please note that if you want to try these stunts please consult your doctor first and have your doctor present when you attempt this stuff.

I just read about this in Quirkology. It's a psychology book written by Richard Wiseman, who took part in this experiment. It's pretty interesting.
