The Aviator

I just went to see the Aviator tonight. The Aviator is the true and strange story of wealthy trustafarian Howard Hughes. It took place in the early 1900's, and I won't tell you much more than that. Anyhow, it was great and I thought you should hear my perspective on it. Why? We'll get to that. It is very rare that I go to the movies... in fact it is about once a year. The reason is just for movie tickets alone it costs me and wife $18 to see a movie. So, instead I wait three months and buy them on DVD. About once a year a movie comes along that you need to experience in the theatre... think 'Lord of the Rings'. The Aviator was that movie. Directed by Scorsese and starring DiCaprio... you have some decent heavy hitters there. I am not going to reveal any plot points. I just wanted to say it was a beautiful and terrific motion picture that deserves to be seen in the theatre.

To contrast my point, this afternoon I watched (with a bit of a hangover) Dodgeball. It was great, and we had a lot of fun watching it. However, the second that movie came out it screamed 'Netflix' to me... a real 'renter'. Meaning, don't worry about the director's cinematic perspective here... it's a Ben Stiller film. Nothing to spend $9 a person on ($9 is what they charge for movies here in Denver... it may differ where you are).

As you may know, or should know... I am a rock music guy. Frankly, as one who goes to the movies about once a year, I am not really qualified to speak on the topic. However, being right all the time offers me perspective that not everyone has. It was a great movie, a classic Scorsese pic. Fascinating storyline, insanely huge and talented cast, and somehow the story never got lost in it all. So, go see the Aviator in the theatres... and I will instruct you when to next see a movie in the theatre.
