If you have ever been in the market for life insurance, chances are you have been confused about the many options and policies available. There are 10 things you need to be aware of in order to get an adequate life policy that suits your needs.
1. Make sure you do a review and comparison at least every 24 months. Term insurance rates fluctuate and insurance companies drop their rates from time to time to stay competitive. Get an online life insurance quote at one of the online quotation sites every couple of years and check the latest prices. You can do this yourself or get your broker to do it with you.
2. If you use a broker, always use one that is contracted with all major life insurance companies so you can do a proper comparison. You can ask him/her how many insurers they deal with.
3. Don't fall in love with your last policy. Your circumstances change and so do your needs. What you bought a few years ago may not be appropriate today.
4. Don't try to shop it on your own. You will get much more value if you actually talk to an experienced insurance broker. I have spoken to so many people who did their own research and decided to buy a certain policy, only to find out there were better and less expensive policies.
5. Consolidate your policies. Most people have several different policies they bought from various sources. You may have a mortgage insurance plan from the bank, a car loan protection plan, and a couple of credit card life insurance plans. If you add up all your life insurance policies, you may find you could replace all those with just one carefully shopped plan. Chances are you will be able to cut your premium in half.
6. Check to see if rates have gone down. If you bought your last term policy more than five years ago, chances are very good you will save money with a new policy. Insurers have been reducing their term insurance rates over the years, but they don't tell you about it. Unless you have a good broker who will help you and keep you up to date, you will never know. You need to be pro-active and take charge.
