Our ancestors fought so we the people would have a say in our government. Many teens—at least at my high school—don’t appreciate that. A campaign called UR Votes Count is designed to get teens involved with the voting process and actually vote when they are eligible in 2012 or 2016. It’s the ultimate mock election for teens.
To get involved, teens attend a mall event where they learn about the issues and then vote. Teens log onto this site and find out where and when an event takes place near their home. They occur at 150 different malls in 42 states over six weeks beginning August 16 and ending September 21. Teens can get involved by text messaging if they can’t make it to their mall event. All they have to do is text the last name of the candidate they want for president (McCain, Obama, Barr, or Nader) to 77812. They must also text back their date of birth and their zip code.
The first UR Votes Count event took place today at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, CA.
I had the chance to attend the event and experience the excitement. Selena Gomez (pictured, star of Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel) kicked off the event by signing autographs and encouraging kids to participate.
Selena is a great spokesperson for the cause. She definitely brought attention to the issue and I am particularly impressed by the way she treated her fans. I saw her rush away from the press just to sign an autograph; she obviously appreciates her fans.
Katie Fung, one of the teens who voted, said about Selena, “She is supporting something that’s not heard, encouraging us to get our voices heard." She also said that she would tell her friends to come and vote.
