First off, there is nothing sexier and nothing that leads one to feeling superior than a good workout. I was a workout junkie for a while then I burned out suddenly because I was just doing too much and not giving myself enough time to heal from injury. Anyway, after some time off, the weather has been beckoning to me and I am back on my Redline Cyclocross bike again.
I used to bike at least 25 miles a day, six days a week. I can't do that right now so I have been taking it easy, working my way back up. I was going to wait another week to go to ten miles a day (my goal is back to 25 miles a day by mid May. With the improvement in the Chicago weather, I don't foresee a problem). I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, so I said to myself "why do tomorrow what can be done today?" I decided to up to ten miles today from five. Hell, it was a beautiful day if not a little windy (okay.. A lot windy ... This is the windy city, after all). I zipped along and at 5 miles, dismounted for a moment to drink some water and take off my jacket as that I was sweating. As I was stowing my gear, I started to notice that a lot of runners were wearing these blue t-shirts that said "Run Against Bush." Of course, I was intrigued and when I finally returned home (the trip back was a killer ... I was fighting the wind the whole way. I should have known better with the amount of chop on the lake today) I decided to look up this "Run Against Bush" and here is what I found.
"Run Against Bush" is a grassroots campaign dedicated to removing George W. Bush from the White House by providing concerned citizens a way to collectively and comfortably express their disapproval of the Bush Administration.
Cool. Fitness with a cause. I'm down with that. Since the two sports I do are running and cycling, I decided to see if there was an equivalent in the cycling world. Sadly, I couldn't find any but I did find this kind of "Bikes Against Bush".
Bikes Against Bush: Using Wireless Bicycles to Protest the 2004 Republican National Convention in NYC.
"Bikes Against Bush" transforms ordinary bicycles into Internet enabled, tactical media weapons for non-violent, creative resistance to the RNC. First and foremost, "Bikes Against Bush" is a wireless bicycle consisting of an ordinary bicycle with an embedded laptop computer, a bluetooth-enabled cell phone affixed to the handlebars, a bluetooth-enabled GPS device, and a webcam. Additionally, "Bikes Against Bush" incorporates a homemade, robotic printing device consisting of a series of spray-chalk aerosol cans that can print chalked text messages on streets and sidewalks while the bicycle is in motion.
Okay, kick ass ... Not only is this guy trying to think of a way novel to protest Bush, but he is using a bicycle AND technology to do it! What a way to get the attention of this Cyberchick.
