Pomo for Dummies - Comments Page 2

Part of: On Postmodernism

What the devil is postmodernism (aka pomo)? And why should you care, anyway?

What the devil is postmodernism (or pomo?)* And why should you care, anyway? Isn't it one of those pretentious terms, like existentialism, that people bandy about a lot but don't really understand? If someone put a gun to your head and said define pomo right now, or you'll be shot in 10 seconds, wouldn't you be, like, dead?…

I don't think Eno has enough emotion in his music to be classified as emo.

You people, all of you, are nuts! Emo! Pomo! Eno! Ono! It's like a Doctor Seuss book for stoned liberal-arts undergraduates!

For the record: Eno and Ono are Pomo, not emo.

Now you've got me doing it! My God!

It's all too much! I'm calling the paddy wagon tonight.

Now! With that out of the way, I must say that the most concise and lucid definition of "pomo" came from -- where else? -- The Simpsons.

HOMER: Hey, Moe! What's with all the crazy new decor?

    MOE: It's Pomo!

Homer, Lenny, and Carl stare blankly

    MOE: You know, post-modern?

Homer, Lenny, and Carl stare blankly

MOE: All right: weird for the sake of weird.

    HOMER, LENNY, AND CARL: Ohhhhhhhhhh!

    Well, what's all this then?

OK, here's my latest two cents:

MOE from the Simpsons is Moe for the sake of Moe.

Eno with Roxy Music--tres pomo but not emo--well, maybe Brian Ferry, but not Eno--oh no.

    Ono? Dunno.

My favorite album this week is a great emo band, This Arcade Fire. Check them out.
Here's a review of the band.

And here's a good look at writing emo messages.

Went to open mike nite tonite.
Lots of young teens singing emo

Why did the emo fan cross the road?

So he can sing about the pain caused by the change.

    Scott:
Young teens singing emo at open mic? Sounds horrific.

    What's next--emo karaoke?

Emo eye for the straight guy? Have to invent a term for a non-emo-ist. Nomo?

Each week on Thursday nite I watch local musicians play open mike nite and invariably half of them are acoustic versions of emo songs.

when I hear them i think of this piece and you.

    Oh shucks, Scott--thank you! :)

Emo unplugged open mic nite? Sounds interesting. I'm imagining some might be hard to handle, but I dunno...with emo unplugged there's probably more emphasis on decent vocals (or the unfortunate lack thereof), no?
