Perez Hilton, Miss California, and the Feud That’s Spreading Across the Internet - Comments Page 2

Why ask the question if you are only expecting one answer?

I am a firm believer in everyone getting their own opinion. When people disagree with me on my political beliefs, I deal with it. When people make fun of the Steelers (my major obsession in life), I turn it into a game. The point is, I get to believe one thing and you can believe another, but there is a celebrity blogger who thinks a person who doesn't agree with him is “a bitch.”…

Listen to how it was worded: "in my country, in my family, I think that I believe..." And prior to that she explains that in "America" people can choose between "opposite" and gay marriage? You say "opposite marriage" should be accepted as a reasonable answer because she said "same sex" marriage?

Is that honestly how dumb you want public discourse to get? This idea that a man and a woman have interlocking parts and are thereby "opposite?" Really? Cool! I guess I'm "opposite married" and prior to that I did a little "opposite dating," too! Yay, I'm articulate!

Pageants like this, for right or for wrong, are all about clear concise statements. Faltering and blundering over her words as she did, there's no way she'd be given any "extra credit" because a few flag-wavers found the addition of "my country" to be patriotic.

The hoops one has to jump through in order to see this young woman's answer as "articulate" are many, Dan. Should she also get extra credit for being a down-home family girl by referencing "my family?"

Your answer that she is in fact referencing a real choice people have, that they can "choose" between gay marriage and opposite marriage, is hilarious. You practically do all but suggest "sure, you can have the idea of getting married to your same-sex partner, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to do it." (Subsequent "intanglement," you say).

Well woopty-freaking-doo! You're free to "consider" the idea of same-sex marriage in America! You're FREE! You can also be ordained as a minister in about 3 seconds online, get a doctorate in "Weed 101" with an internet certificate, and eat bacon-flavoured mayo.

By that theory you can also "choose" gay marriage or "opposite" marriage in Iran, too.

That completely leaves off the absurd and offensive notion that follows: this brilliant, articulate individual believes that it's "great" that people can "choose" between two types of marriage, but she is against that very "choice" in her country.

She's essentially saying "gosh, I think it's great that you guys all have that choice, but I sure wish ya didn't! Tee-hee!"

The picture tells it all! Let's all try to make our laws of our land to reflect what GOD wants from us, not what our sinful minds and bodies want, so selfish are we. Wouldn't it be an awesome world if we could follow His laws.

The second you all agree on what his laws are, maybe we'll give it a shot.

"It's a blunder to lay claim to the country you're a citizen of?"

It's also redundant. Women from other countries don't compete in the Miss USA contest. Thanks for helping to point out yet another reason she gave a terrible answer.

"Let's all try to make our laws of our land to reflect what GOD wants from us...Wouldn't it be an awesome world if we could follow His laws."

No thanks, Relying on God ruined Battlestar Galactica. btw, your YouTube link is a tad ridiculous as it looks like Jesus is smiling on the cross.

"By that theory you can also "choose" gay marriage or "opposite" marriage in Iran, too."

    Iran doesn't have gays, remember?

    "It's also redundant..." (*my* country)

ridiculous. Patriotism is wholesome. Wholesomeness is attractive.

She's 21. Scathing critisism of her every utterance demonstrates a fanatic intolerance for contrary viewpoints.

Activists like Perez would like to believe that only ugly hateful kooks have her opinion. He took the gamble and behaved like an ugly hateful kook when she offered the opinion that 70% of Americans share. She is stunning, and her opinion counts in his pathetic superficial world view.

He met with some reality, thus his uncivilized response.

Where's the patriotism in stating "I think its great that Americans are able to choose...same-sex marriage or opposite marriage" only to follow with "in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman"? If she thinks that she believes the latter about her country, then how can she believe the ability to choose is great? Those two ideas are in conflict. And who other than bisexuals choose between the two types of marriage?

"Scathing critisism of her every utterance demonstrates a fanatic intolerance for contrary viewpoints."

That would be a great point if it had anything to do with the issue at hand. Maybe you have no idea how the Miss USA pageant works but she was in a contest where she was being judged on this particular utterance.

What's truly stunning is how supporters of her position ignore how poorly she stated it.

The patriotism was in the "my" before "country".

Someone nitpicked that she "blundered" saying "my".

Unitarian churches marry gays don't they? If so, then Americans get to choose.

"What's truly stunning is how supporters of her position ignore how poorly she stated it."--El Bicho

It's the right to have her opinion, free from an agenda driven beauty pageant judges retribution, that is supported.

President Obama has stated the same opinion, quite starkly, and less diplomatic, but I'm guessing gay marriage activists aren't bothered since they figure he doesn't mean it. Although maybe there is some critisism that I haven't heard.

El Richo, the picture is what it is... If you think it is Jesus smiling on the cross, thats fine, but our world is desperately needing some guidance! When a person is asked a question and she gives her heart felt answer even though many bias people think she should have said it in a more neutral way, then thats wrong! Calling Names for the truth. If the roles were reversed between her and Hilton can you imagine what Hilton may have said? No one should be put into a situation on such a controversial subject as marriage of same sex and not be expected to say what they truly believe. We need more of this!

Unitarian churches marry gays don't they?

Yep, but it's still only LEGAL in 4 states. What part of that aren't you getting? Do you honestly believe that homosexuals have the right to CHOOSE to be married freely in the United States of America? Because if they do, what the hell is all the fuss about?

Although maybe there is some critisism that I haven't heard.

Quite a bit, probably. I'm not sure what circles you spend time in, but I know quite a few American homosexuals that are deeply saddened by Obama's backwards stance on the issue.

He does stand in support of civil unions, however, and has expressed a need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act along with ensuring that the thousands of rights associated with marriage can be afforded to homosexual couples as well. It's a step in the right direction, to be sure, but it also leaves Obama painfully short of the goal.

    Brett,

No one should be put into a situation on such a controversial subject as marriage of same sex and not be expected to say what they truly believe.

I don't know that anybody's disputing this. She certainly did say what she truly believes (perhaps) and nobody is attempting to take that right away nor criticize her for exercising that right. The discussion is couched, rather, in the idea that what she said and how she said it was infused with gross ignorance, blundering, and idiocy. And guess what? Her opinion is wide open for criticism by virtue of her being in a free country that supposedly values open discourse.

All pageant judges have agendas, like it or not. That Perez was so public and crass is to be expected, as that's pretty much the type of jackass he is.

I wonder how an openly lesbian pageant contestant would be approached.

    Patriotism is wholesome.

Patriotism is foolhardy ego largely based on accident/providence of birth.

Or, as Sinclair Lewis put it: "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross."

How can you punish someone for their beliefs? I have respect for someone who speaks honestly and is true to his/her heart. Would she have lied so just to win the crown and make Perez happy!? Is there a correct answer to Hilton's question!? You have shown that it is not the Christian that is hateful, it is the gay people that are hateful and intolerant. Unfortunately for the homosexual community, Perez has not represented you well! Why the hell is he even a judge?

Thank You Perez, for giving us a new spoke's person for traditional marriage. It looks like Ms Prejean won after all, she has ten times the thrust into stardome as the other girl, what's her name? If gay marriage was ment to be there wouldn't be AID's to wipe it out.
