One Big Happy Podcast #001

Part of: One Big Happy

Unwisely disregarding my lack of experience in radio or with audio production, I've created my first podcast. As I expected, nearly everything that could go wrong did, and so I started later than I hoped, ran over schedule, and was boring in parts, but I did grab it all in one take, and left the 'ums' and 'uhs' intact.

It is 25 minutes, 42 seconds long, available in mp3 format, and is only a 6.3MB download.

One Big Happy Podcast #001: First Things First
Download the MP3 file, or subscribe to the One Big Happy podcast feed. You can also catch future episodes of One Big Happy podcast when you subscribe to the podcast feed for the Blogcritics Radio Network.

Complete schedule of the show:
00:00 Welcome
00:22 ♩ "Opera Singer" by Cake from Comfort Eagle
00:47 About the nascent Blogcritics Radio Network
02:05 Introducing the cast of One Big Happy
04:05 ♩ "The Beauty of Gray" by Live from Mental Jewelry
04:13 What the OBH podcast is and what it isn't
08:32 ♩ "Take Back the Beat" by Church of Rhythm* from Church of Rhythm
08:41 Thaniel presents a scam, er, business plan
13:28 ♩ "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" by Scatman John from The Best of Scatman John
13:34 Quick-takes on a few movies
22:41 ♩ "Come Out and Play" by The Offspring from Smash
22:47 Closing (with Bonus Dramatic Reading!)
25:18 ♩ "Opera Singer" by Cake from Comfort Eagle (reprise)
25:42 End of podcast

As the short durations probably make clear, the listed songs are excerpted very briefly.

The book mentioned near the end of the podcast is in fact only available used, but it is available.

* Earlier I stated that I had used a Code of Ethics clip, but it turns out I was mis-remembering, and the clip was from Church of Rhythm. I'll use a clip from Code of Ethics in a future podcast in an effort to atone. Sorry.

Past episodes are also available at the official home of One Big Happy Podcast

    Wow -- Code of Ethics?!

I helped set up a show that they did one many many years ago -- they were playing a concert with The Echoing Green.

    Deja vu, dude.

I just saw this listed on the right. Thumbs up.

I was wondering whether you were going to deliver soon. I will listen later today.

Did it go pretty much one-take as you imagined?

Heh - the pressure on me is rising... Let me just say the delay in Quiz Time was not unintentional or procrastination...:)

Temple, yes, you should listen. You might find an interesting bit near the end. :-)

Yeah, we went in one take -- I managed to corral my wife, my brother, and his wife.

The software I was using didn't track time, as I thought it id, but measures. Had I been using 1/1 time and 60bpm, I could have done the math, as it is we ran long a bit.

I learned a lot from this first episode, for sure. Until I get a better microphone (I just need $150 for the ideal setup, I think), I'm going to limit future podcasts to two people. People talking 15 feet away from the little tiny mic built into my iMac don't sound great. :-)

Mark, I did buy the DVD, so I liked it; my complaints were mainly about how it was covered. Interesting story, and not unbelievable? Yes. Typical of middle America? Hardly.

Mark, ... and thank you! Each episode will get better for a while, I promise. :-)

i think the part that is very close to middle america is general dissatisfaction with life in general. the spacey character reminded me a little of the main character in anne tyler's Ladder of Years.

man, you guys are almost making me wish i did a podcast.

And where did Mondo Irlando go on the podcast list, right?

The Duke needs to update, and apparently has not done so in two weeks, at which point he drops off the list. I hear through the grapevine that he's hard at work preparing episode 13, though...

Sorry, Warren, I had bum info up here earlier. I've fixed the post and left a footnote to explain.

Entertaining listen, Mr. Winn! Surprising how youthful you all sound. Somehow from the wisdom generally displayed in most of your comments around here, I would have expected to hear a person of more advanced years.

The sound was a bit faint in places, but it was worth straining a little to have the diversity of voices there. I hope you won't have to limit too many future episodes to just two people. The interplay between all of you was one of my favorite elements.

Oh, and one more thing. Thaniel stole my business idea! But since he was the first one to actually vocalize it rather than just thinking about it, I'll share my most brilliant contribution to the idea with you and through you, with him.

    Just two words: vegan market.

    Keep up the good work.

Eventually I'm going to get a microphone or two (Shure SM58s, probably) as well as USB adapters so I can use 'em. Just gotta save up my pennies.

Thanks for the kind words. Every episode should get better for a while, and then I guess they'll level out in quality. Let's hope that they level off at high quality!

    6. Nice humor. Writer joke was good. New joke also !!!. My family, maybe not yours. Texchun.

    7. There seems to a site you keep mentioning. I think I've heard of it.

    8. I thought clips could be 40 seconds? And I do want labels down my neck, soo. It's my legal experiment.

    9. Actual time: 25:42

    10. Please do more to offend Texans.

    11. OK then, I erased all those "failing" e-mails I had stored.

Temple, loud blast? Is there a severe disparity between my voice and the opening Cake clip?

Is the rule 40 seconds? 'Cause I found a nice 32 second clip last night I'd like to use at some point.

I did accidentally refer to Herself by name once. Nice catch.

The premature ending wasn't my fault -- that bit with the book reading was entirely unscripted.

Ha! on the email. It's obhpodcast at gmail dot com, for anyone who hasn't actually listened.

    Thanks!

The Duke never commented. Must be of the "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" school. Thanks, The Duke, for not ripping me apart, at least! :-)

Phillip! i'll hear nothing of the sort! no, the truth of the case is that i haven't gotten to give it a decent listen yet, and only allowed myself a cheeky five minute preview, which then turned into a cheecky ten minute preview on account of the wonderful back-room family-gatherin atmosphere. it was so warm! and also, it adds to my thoery that i have never met a commited christian (which, i think, was your term) that i didn't find wonderful, even if, when we get down to the nitty gritty, maybe there's disagreements or whatever. but no, a warm, oddly touching affair is what it was, an i was diggin the laughin no end. but then i put it off, so as i could hear it when i didn't have STUFF TO BE DONE hangin o'er my head. i think, starting tomorow evening, im gonna put aside a podcast listenin 2-hour slot, since unlike, say, radio 1 or whatever, i don't just get on with stuff when a shit song comes on. in the podcastin field a things, there ARE no shit song moments, i don't wanna be distracted by other nonsense while it's on. this is also why i didn't get further into temples stuff yet, an so tomorow, for the inagural podcast listenin eve, i will have this right here and temple on the go.

i make it sound like i lead an awful busy life, which couldn't be further from the truth.
