I sure wish I had a better recording of my first celebrity interview, with Adam Goldberg. For that matter, I wish I were a better interviewer.

Complete schedule of the show:

00:00 Welcome

00:19 ♩ "Opera Singer" by Cake from Comfort Eagle

00:43 Meet the Family: Herself and Thaniel, but nothing exciting

03:55 ♩ "Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus" by Audio Adrenaline from Bloom

04:05 Roundhouse of Craziness: A quest for a catalog of mental disorders

12:07 ♩ "Ticket To Heaven" by 3 Doors Down from Away From The Sun

12:25 Roundhouse of Craziness: Continuing the quest for insanity

14:40 ♩ "Just Friends" by Gavin DeGraw from Chariot

14:54 Celebrity Interview: Talking with Adam Goldberg about a Blogcritics.org post on which he commented. [Warning: contains "the N word," used in a discussion of racism]

27:23 ♩ "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" by Scatman John from The Best of Scatman John

27:29 Wrap-up:

28:24 ♩ "Take Back the Beat" by Church of Rhythm from Church of Rhythm

28:51 End of podcast

As the short durations probably make clear, the listed songs are excerpted very briefly.

I apologize ahead of time for the poor audio quality of the interview segment. I apparently recorded the phone call at a level that was much too low, and I lack the ability to improve the quality after the fact.

Though 'Thaniel was maybe angling for a bit of support, since comments tend to run 3:1 against his involvement in the podcast, feel free to ignore that part. Do send us email at obhpodcast [at] gmail [.] com and let us know about your brushes with insanity, though.

We're listed on Podcast Alley, Odeo, and iTunes. As well as, of course, here.

Is this the second or third you have released since my last episode?

If you mean your episode #4, released on Sep 1, then this is actually the fourth!

    Sorry.

Oh holy hell... and I just got word from my boss (translation: the wife to whom I am married) that we have to go run painful errands tonight. I got some recording done last night... tonight just got shot to hell. Blast.

    4???

I'll check this out tonight, Phil. As per the low levels on the Gold segment, I will see if I can offer any help. What program are you using?

The Goldberg levels were better than you thought... I could hear it pretty well for the most part.

I think Thaniel should be on an every third episode rotation. :)

Those levels were after quite a lot of tweaking, and there was plenty of noise to go along with it, but thanks.

Every third? He apparently stinks up the place quite a bit, eh? :-)

I don't think he stinks the place up, per se. Like I said about an earlier episode, having the gallery participate mixes things up and keeps a certain liveliness.

But when he's there, the conversation quickly and often turns to how much the audience doesn't want him there. He's family and a cast member. Don't apologize for him so much. And keep him on a rotating basis. ;)

Drat! I try to avoid meta-talk, but we slipped into it with Thaniel, and I didn't even realize it. Bummer.

    Thanks for the comments!

Self-referentialism is not the worst thing in the world. I get very self-referential in the ongoing saga that is The DJRadiohead Podcast Experience. Although reminding everyone they hate something might not be the best kind of self-referentialism. Keep 'em coming.

Phil, I agree with DJRad. The Goldberg segment had a little bit of static, but the levels weren't as bad as you hinted, especially considering it was over the phone. But I know--- you want it to be perfect!

I think a few times, Adam tapered off because he was in thought, but otherwise sounded good, and made some valid points.

As for Thaniel, he's like the annoying sidekick from many radio shows. But you have to remember that the sidekick is there as a foil to the host and his wife's smart remarks and humor.

  • 13 - DJRadiohead

    Sep 28, 2005 at 4:09 pm

And I agree with Mark... let Herself zing the sidekick. Problem: solved.

  • 14 - Phillip Winn

    Sep 28, 2005 at 4:10 pm

Heh, now I'm tempted to call him "Thaniel the sidekick," but that's more of that annoying stuff again.

Aight, advice taken. We'll rotate him, and stop referring to his annoyingness. :-)

    how about "Himself"?

  • 16 - Mark Sahm

    Sep 28, 2005 at 4:18 pm

Also of worthy note (which I think I heard in 006) is when Phil and Herself have a bit of spousal static... I found that humorous. Next time you two disagree over how to hang the towels in the bathroom, say "Let's take it to the podcast, and resolve it there!"

I agree with this Mark, too. Definitely.

We had static? Now I've got to find that. :-)

Do you remember what it was about? It wasn't that stupid "blood type diet" thing, was it?

Oh yeah, I thought there was going to be a death in the family.

I've been looking forward to the interview with Adam Goldberg.

Surely the interview is about something else as well, right?

  • 22 - Phillip Winn

    Sep 29, 2005 at 12:14 am

The interview has basically three parts. This is part two, which, along with part three, focus on the BC incident. Part one, which may only become available as an "extra" download, is about him and his movies.

    Listened.

Nathaniel ruins the podcast because you both mocked him. In that way, it was an uncomfortable listen.

And since I was "foolish" enough to read the comments here first i was listening for it. Otherwise i probably wouldn't have notcied it.

I've liked him in the other two (?) he's been in.

and I will ALWAYS remember - to my grave - 9riiiiight?) that he beat me in one of Aaman's Quiz Time er, quizzes, so he is smarter than he sounds .... i keeeed.

Good interview. If you had someone playing pool in the background like I did, it would have worked. ;-)

You realize now what the audio interviews reveals about newspaper writing? We often cut out the "you know"s and so on because otherwise each article would be about 10 inches longer.

    Sep 29, 2005 at 9:38 am

He is a lot smarter than he sounds, isn't he? ;-)

The "ums" and "you knows" are why I don't intend to ever writer up a transcript of this thing!

Thanks for listening, Temple. We'll stop mocking him.
