A church in western Pennsylvania trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.
Now I know I shouldn't laugh. My mother was a "holy roller" and I know how she told me at 4 or 5 that there was no Easter Bunny or Santa Clause or Tooth Fairy. To this day, I'm still a little pissed about it... I was then told not to ruin it for my playmates who's parents may be of different faiths. Do you know how hard it was to keep that a secret at that age? Also, can you imagine how the holidays lost a little bit of fun at that point? I still got presents but... well.. there was no magic, which is the exact reason why this flavor of Christendom doesn't want anyone to believe in these "pagan" characters. There is no room for magic in fundamentalist Christianity. But as usual... I digress...
I still cannot help but to giggle at the thought of the look on the faces of the parents and children as the Easter Bunny was whipped and all the eggs smashed. Talk about being a downer! They should have put a disclaimer on the program. Not all Christians are down with new, "scary-crazy' fanaticism that seems to be gripping parts of the nation lately. Then again, whipping the Easter Bunny is more acceptable than talking about sex or seeing boobies.
Lesson of the day:
Violence done in the name of Christianity is OKAY to be view by children.
