Nicolas Cage is Superman's Father

Nicolas Cage became a father for the second time yesterday. It was the first child for Cage and his third wife, Alice Kim. He has a 13 year old son from a previous relationship. He was previously married to Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley, with no kids.

This isn't the kind of thing I normally write about, but there is something that attracted my attention, as you can probably tell by the title of the column.

Nicolas Cage has taken crazy celebrity baby names and a comic book obsession to another level. His son has gotten the wonderful name of Kal-El Coppola Cage. Read that first name again, Kal-El. For those who don't know, Kal-El is the Kryptonian name of Superman, who also is known as Clark Kent. I cannot imagine giving a child a name like that. I wonder if he was thinking about the time he was up to play the lead in a Tim Burton directed Superman movie? Reliving the possibility of being Kal-El, becoming so one with the idea that he wanted to always be around the name always. I kid.

It just makes me wonder, have celebrities taken these names too far? In an effort to be "clever" or "original" are they inadvertantly scarring their children? Think about what these kids will put up with in school with names like Banjo, Pilot Inspektor, Denim, Jermajesty, Pirate, Reign Beau, and my favorite Audio Science.

Next to those, Kal-El seems almost tame. Still, these kids are headed for a rough childhood, kids can be cruel.

Anyway, I wish Nicolas well with his new little bundle all the best. Just, please, think before you name your children.
