Nick Jonas Raises Awareness About Diabetes

Nick Jonas could have died. In November 2005, Nick Jonas wasn’t feeling his normal self. In two weeks, he lost 15 pounds. He was thirsty all of the time and constantly had to go to the bathroom. He had a horrible attitude. The Jonas Brothers — Nick along with Joe and Kevin Jonas — were in the middle of a school tour when this happened. He had to be rushed to the hospital. It turned out that Nick’s blood sugar was 790, when the normal value is around 100. He stayed at the hospital for three days, where they gave him a “crash course” on diabetes, which Nick was diagnosed with.

Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas stops producing insulin. Insulin puts glucose, a form of energy, into cells. So, without insulin, blood sugar levels become too high, which is simply really bad.

“When I was first diagnosed, I did think. I had a great medical history. I had never stayed in the hospital before. I didn’t know anybody with diabetes. So it was a shock,” Nick Jonas has said about being diagnosed at age 13. About 15,000 kids have type 1 diabetes, so it isn’t that surprising that Nick didn’t know anyone with the disease.

Nick went public with his diabetes in March 2007, after he felt comfortable with it. To share his story, Nick wrote the song on his new CD, “A Little Bit Longer” (available on iTunes) about his struggle with diabetes.

“Now I have to check everything that is prepared for Nicholas,” Denise Jonas, Nick’s mom, said. “I have to check every carbohydrate, every ingredient and make sure it’s balanced out with what the doctor says he should be eating, and we’re checking his blood sugar constantly.” This can sometimes be difficult due to the boys’ busy schedule, touring, recording, and winning six Teen Choice Awards.
