As another example of how parts of our government are completely out of control, the White House would like the initial deployment of the missile defense system to be exempted from operational testing.
Lovely.
In the future when we're dealing with enormous deficits and a stagflated economy, I will look back at this use of Sept. 11th as another excuse to line the pockets of defense contractors.

I have always thought the missile defense shield a quixotic goal. It is possible that it a goal worth pursuing even though it will never provide real protection for the technology it will generate, sort of like the space program. But I can't think of any reason why it should be exempt from "operational testing."
