Miley Cyrus Sued Over Asian Picture

For some reason, Miley Cyrus just keeps taking controversial and/or offensive pictures of herself. You would think after the multiple pictures with her bra clearly exposed, her lying on random boys' laps, and the Vanity Fair disaster, she'd think and realize that she and cameras don't exactly mix well. That's what normal people would think, but nope. Now Miley has another controversial picture, but this one could cost her big bucks.

The newest picture involves Miley (with boyfriend Justin Gaston and other assorted friends) slanting her eyes to make them look more “Asian.” Despite the fact there was an Asian in the picture, people find this picture offensive.

On the issue, Miley said, “I’ve…been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!”

On her official fansite, she was quoted saying, "I really wanted to stress how sorry I am if the photo of me with my friends offended anyone."

The problem I do have is someone is suing Miley over the picture for four billion dollars. Regardless of whether you find the picture offensive, this is just ridiculous. Four billion dollars. Yeah, I'm sorry you find this picture offensive, but that doesn't mean you get four billion dollars. Everyone gets offended over something, but everyone isn't cashing out over it.

Lucie J. Kim is taking Miley to the L.A. Superior Court, representing the one million Asian Pacific Islanders in Los Angeles, on the grounds that she was “A victim of [Cyrus'] discriminatory acts.”

Kim goes on to claim that Miley "knew or should have known that her image would be publicly disseminated via the media, which Cyrus knew focused on her private life." Her argument was that Miley "had actual knowledge that her conduct was in fact a form of racism, prejudice and mockery of the physical attributes of Asian Pacific Islanders."

Give me a break. Kim is just greedy.

Besides, people can be really stupid. It's not like Miley Cyrus is the only one doing stuff like this. Just pay a visit to Facebook. She's a teenager. She's allowed to be a little stupid sometimes.

I can't believe I'm actually defending Miley Cyrus, but when it comes to stupid lawsuits this one takes the cake. Hopefully the L.A. Court will just throw this garbage out. Honestly, it just wastes everyone's time.

Why does the lawsuit not involve any of the other people in the "offensive" picture?

    Oh right...

We think this whole thing is stupid! C'mon she's a 16 year old girl having fun with her friends and we agree with Jordan Richardson what happens to the other people in the photo? Nothing! This is getting pretty much more press than Chris Brown's arrest! Geez!

I am part Asian, but I don't find this offensive at all. Had you grown up when I did in the 1960s, you'd know that things were a lot worse then. I find it sad, and stupid. But she's a teenager, and being sad and stupid is the definition of being a teen.

She is a teenager, so she is allowed to be stupid and racist? Playing dumb and innocent doesn't cut it. Especially if one knows how big of the influence and impact can she/ he give to the youngsters? Lawsuit is a gesture that this is nothing to be taken lightly - not something "oh she is young, let it go". This kind of attitude itself keeps racism active and alive.

Lol. This is ridiculous. I'm asian and I do not find this offensive at all. If you're asian and find this offensive, you shouldn't be. The majority of asians don't even give a crap about this photo. I think when ppl slant their eyes and say asian jibberish words like "Ching Chong Ching" I don't get offended at all, they act like it's our language. They're the ones making themselves look stupid. lol. If I posted my pictures of my white friends doin the same thing, no one would give a crap. Just because she's Miley.... -sigh-

I am Korean who is currently living in Europe where there is also a lot of racism, both overt and covert as well as institutional and individual. Therefore I can see why some East Asians have decided to make a point out of this incident.

Having said that, I don't believe Lucie Kim and others behind her should punish this clueless teenage girl in Hollywood for her clueless behavior. I was more furious when the Spanish National Basket Ball Olympic team shot an offical photo of them, in which everyone of them posed with this pose. That was mind-bogglingly primitive. They obviously did not understand the meaning of 'Olympics'.

This time around, she was only acting out the prejudices almost like a reflex, in a clueless and stupid way. These prejudices are so wide spread, we almost take them as part of our culture - just look at the reaction to the lawsuit!

Anyway, Lucie Kim, the girl is under-educated, under-aged but over-sexualised Hollywood airhead. Likable but nonetheless an airhead. Just let her go.

    Maddy,

It's a good thing my sons are not rich and famous, or every Jew-hating idiot in the Middle East would sue them for what they do on Facebook. In fact, come to think of it, it's a good thing I'm not rich and famous either, or every malicious and greedy Jew-hating idiot in the Middle East would be suing me, too.

But while being sued for $4 billion is a bit over the top, I realized that we were rich when my mother, may she rest in peace, was sued for $2 million over a car accident. I actually asked her if I could get a few thou before the lawyers ate up the money (something they are very good at).

Truth is that Mom was as broke as a church-mouse, if you'll excuse the expression, and suing people for $2 million over car accidents in NYC was just standard procedure in the court system there - like belching is after a filling meal in a Chinese restaurant....

Anyway, Maddy, you managed to remind me to check my Facebook account - just in case anybody is suing me for $4 billion. I mean, if they sue you for it, you gotta have it, right?

people that don't find this offensive it's because they're not asian. I'm asian myself and it's quite embarassing to be mocked for our attributes.

before all this happened, i liked miley cyrus. but now that i see how racist she is, she just gets on my nerves!!! every time i see her on tv, i just change the channel. how would she feel like it if people made fun of her race and said it was just a joke? ha! didnt think so!!

  • 15 - Some on who feels offended for not being Asain

    Feb 22, 2009 at 4:11 pm

    What that woman is doing is racist;
1st would she sue cyrus is cyrus were asain
2nd she wants Cyrus to give every ASAIN in Los Angeles county $4000.00 (hey i'm white but what if I felt offended by the photo, well I don't get any money cause i'm NOT asain)
3rd If that woman interpretated the picture as "asain eyes" then that is her fault, did miley ever say anything about Asains, was there a poster that read asain eyes, no that is just an interpretation.

You might want to get your facts correct.

Lucie Kim is filing a CLASS ACTION lawsuit. Which means that SHE HERSELF won't get $4B. In that particular area, the total fine that one can get at any one time for violations of civil rights is $4K. So before you call her "greedy," you might want to do your homework. After attorney's fees, she and the rest of the LA County Asian population won't get 4K.

Even if she doesn't win (and she likely won't), the issue is that she's trying to make a point, which I totally agree with - you have to be responsible for your own actions, otherwise it will end you up in court, or worse - whether you're a teenager or not. Youthful indiscretion is apparently only a legitimate excuse for white teenagers, am I right? Teenagers of color do stupid things. But they're not slapped on the wrist for it - they're often thrown in jail or called Juvenile Delinquents or considered as premature drains on society.

Miley's First Amendment rights are not being violated at all - because, as it's written, the GOVERNMENT could not imprison or sue Miley for it. Individuals or non-government run entities, however, can sue you or have your fired.

To the person above me - I would like for you to actually experience what racism really is. It's not someone who is sitting there laughing at you because you're a member of a certain racial group It goes deeper than that. Trust - you would either end up on drugs or kill yourself because it would be impossible to adapt. Then to have people like Miley Cyrus who has no clue at all mock you because of your race, whether she has an Asian kid in there or not? That's insulting.

to the person 2 people above me, i agree but its not true that teens of color dont get a slap on the wrist, while white kids do. My friend got in trouble for stealing when she didn't do it while the kid who did do it (i was there and i saw it happen with my other friend) didn't even get a taking to, and she was mexican.

I'm asian myself, and I don't find it offensive. What teenager DOESN'T try to have fun? I really don't get why an Pacific Islander would even sue her when I haven't seen any Pacific Islander with eyes that are "slanted" or "lines." I really hope she isn't serious about this lawsuit.
