I hear that to visit the spiritual leader in his spiritual home, you go through many checks etc and then you PAY a substantial sum. I would have thought it would be free to visit him and then donations would be welcome. I understand he has to live but I am not sure I am encouraged by the fact that one has to pay to see him.

If that is true let me ponder (meditate) that thought for a moment.

So he has already achieved enlightenment by rejecting the things of this world.

But he charges money for an audience. Hmmmm... any takers?

Did you check to see if it was TRUE first?

Hey Nick. I haven't checked it out myself. However, I heard this from an acquaintance who went on a trip with some colleagues. I don't think he would have any reason to lie about it. Perhaps you would like to check and let me know if my friend is telling a fib? I'll try to find out.

What I've found so far: a page on Dharamsala,

    http://www.tibet.com/dasaguide.html

    from which I got this:

"The Residence of His Holiness Dalai Lama is opposite the Tsuglag Khang, or the Central Cathedral, which is about ten minutes' walk from McLeod Gunj. Time permitting, His Holiness receives visitors in public audiences. Visitors can apply for public audiences at the Branch Security Office in McLeod Gunj, near Hotel Tibet. Applications for private audiences, however, need to be made in writing to His Holiness' Secretary several months in advance."

Nothing about fees, but the page was last updated June 30 2001.
I do know that when the Temple near me in New York state hosted HHDL on the occasion of the dedication of a new hall (1995-96?) they charged $100 but that was for entrance to the grounds for the entire ceremony, not for HHDL himself, and I believe most of the money went to the temple itself.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised that security is tighter now about those wanting to meet him. He's getting old, he's been a thorn in Beijing's side for forty-five years, and the Chinese boy who was determined to be the new incarnation of the Panchen Lama (who will determine the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama) was 'disappeared' along with his family several years ago (and not seen since); Beijing has put forward their own Panchen candidate, and you never know when they might get impatient...

Interesting, Nick. I haven't even bothered to check. I just re-confirmed from my colleagues and they promise me that payment was needed. Oh well, on principle it seems a bad thing to me. However, I was never going to visit him.

To be fair, he has to make a living somehow. Perhaps they are just asking for contributions for the upkeep of the Temple and it so happens that they ask before you see him. Who knows?!

Wan Mo betta trut, not in Dharamsala

The Swami chuckled and said, “So -- that’s your meeting with the Dalai Lama?
    "Yes."
"So -- you got no guidance or inspiration from you meeting?"
“I got another inspired insight. Just thinking of dying in a head-on crash with the Dali Lama was an inspiring moment, wondering of our respective oblivions, he off to his and me to mine.”

To be certain one would have to try to contact him personally. It may not be Dalai Lama's idea to collect money to allow individuals to see him, however if it is so consider that he may be motivated in ways that are wholly unconventional that don't fit into any box.

Money exists there's nothing wrong with it. It's a question of motivation.

Personally, I'd be more inclined to pay a fee to spend 30 minutes with the Dalai Lama than $40 for a baseball player's autograph.

    Voice vs. Thought....Communicating?

If you are "listening" with your mind and not your ears; well then you are communicating...

It is something similar to seeing with your eyeballs vs. viewing with your third eye.

    Are you 100% positive that what you heard may not have been the Lama Doli who communicates much the same message that the Dali Lama speaks; free will;
except for the fact that SHE communicates it in a different [universal] language -i.e. "thought" - your own perhaps; and in a somewhat different sentence structure?

Is it possible to THINK the opposite way yet say [communicate] the same message?

Would it matter if that thought was a [wave lenght]? Or even if it was a WOO-man?

I've been told in the past that I am shallow... but I believe; in my opinion; that I am so deep that I come up shallow on the other side...

Just another of my own silly thoughts... about myself, that is...

I'm still learning... Please give me time to understand EVERYONES' point of view...

I believe everyone has a right to be heard... um... I mean to communicate... what they think in their own mind...

Peace of mind is an individual thing.

Thank Goodness, that is what makes us all human, after all.
