Katrina: What Can Be Done? - Comments Page 2

Generally I am overwhelmed by the hopelessness of what is going on there. However, it seems to me that there must be something more we can be doing. Yes, there are tens of thousands of people there. There are also millions of people literally watching in horror. The blogosphere is making the donation push and I've put money in and I expect I'll put more in. I am not sure that the money helps. I can't seem to find a number to spend that will get people moving towards food and water.…

What can be done? How about...build outside or around the large "bowl" aka New Orleans? There's a start. Next...track where the billions of dollars congress approved are being spent. you have to make sure no dem's start up a sweet little slush fund. from there...any suggestions?

I live in Anniston AL. I would love to foster or adopt an infant child who has been affected by Huricane Katrina. I have a seventeen year old daughter and a ten year old son. We would love to open our home to a child in need.

Katrina orphans & foster children: According to sources in the affected state's governments, there are three things you should know about fostering or adopting Katrina orphans:

    1. Louisiana and Mississippi will be working with other states in finding foster children needed homes, but they cannot place children in unlicensed homes.
    2. Adoption of Hurricane Katrina orphans will not be a possibility for many months as agencies work to locate family first. Many families have been separated. It may take several months before we know which children have extended family ready to take them in and which children need an adoption placement.
    3. The court process of terminating parental rights takes many months. Not only for the scheduling of the court date itself, but to prove that a child does not have family resources.

In any case, this news article is not the place to express your willingness to adopt or help these orphans and foster children.

Carrie Craft of About.com recommends: "Remember that your home state is always in need of foster families as many wait in group homes for a family. If you are not called upon to help a Hurricane Katrina child, please consider helping other children in need within your community."

The link at the top of this comment includes many ways to help Katrina orphans and fosters while the waiting period passes.

My husband & I are licensed foster/adoptive parents on the East Coast of Maryland. We have a 13 year old son and a 2 1/2 year old daughter. Our son is our birth child. We adopted our daughter last year. She came into our home as a foster child at 4 weeks of age. We would love to give a child who has lost their family a place in our home. Please contact us.

I don't want to adopt, but I could offer our country home in New Hampshire until a child is re-united with their parent. My son is now 33 and his room is empty. These children are stressed enough, being clustered in big buildings with no personal attention is emotionally harmful.

This is NOT the place for this! If you're serious about adopting or fostering or helping Katrina orphans, go here.

Just curious: Why is this not a good place for this discussion? Or do you mean just if you're serious about action then go to that link?
