  • Fanzine - Plokta

  • Fan Writer - Dave Langford

  • Web Site - Sci Fiction - Emerald City was nominated too

  • Best Semiprozine - Ansible

  • Best Professional Artist - Jim Burns

  • Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form - Battlestar Galactica, “33? - there's one American award at least:)

  • Best Dramatic Presentation - Long Form - The Incredibles - hmmm, not too pleased about that one

  • Best Related Book - The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction

  • Best Short Story - "Travels with my cats" - Mike Resnick - American, if it matters

  • Best Novelette - "The Faery Handbag" - Kelly Link

  • Best Novella - The Concrete Jungle - Charles Stross

  • Best Novel - Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - That's a great book there

Pretty nice that the three short awards are all available for free reading online - linked above. The Hugos were earlier cast under some controversial light, not unusual for science fiction, when the fact that all the Best Novel nominees are British was explained by Charles Stross as due to a fixation on 9/11 by the American writers.

I've never understood Resnick's appeal to the awards-givers. I've never been impressed with any of his work.

Until now -- I quite enjoyed this winning story. He didn't actually spell out everything so much, leaving some mystery and suggesting some possibilities. Very nicely done.

    Thanks for the coverage!

Resnick is a fanboy who made it big. He knows everyone, goes to conventions and everyone likes him. IMO he's also a good, if idiosyncratic writer. The short story field has become more and more weak in recent years because there is less and less short fiction, fewer good anthologies, and as a result the competition is just not there. Plus, the increasing focus on 'straight' science fiction and blowing off anything that smacks of fantasy or horror eliminates a lot of good contenders.

Check out this plank-walking by Kelly Link

Link's new collection, Magic for Beginners, is just out, with rave reviews in Entertainment Weekly, among others. It includes some of her very best work, including, for example, the magnificent and wonderfully odd "Stone Animals," which Matt Cheney did an eloquent job of discussing earlier this year. You can also sample the lovely title story of the collection in F&SF magazine this month.

Does your book have any socially redeeming qualities? If so, what are they?
My book did not vote for George Bush. (It wasn't actually a book yet, during the election, and even if it had been, books aren't allowed to vote because they don't have fingers or driver's licenses.
