Spring has finally arrived and I, like most, am excited to shed the pants for a more freeing skirt. This season, however, skirts are facing the return of an old challenger - shorts.
All over the runway and red carpet, cuffed shorts have been popping up on start like Charlize Theron. When paired with a sheer blouse, the shorts only help to accentuate Theron’s statuesque legs.
Alternatives to the “classic” shorts have included new lush materials like Amanda Bynes velvet variety — an attempt at transitioning from winter to spring without diving in headfirst.
The next transition is huge for everyone blinded by and saved from the flash - walking shorts. Similar to Bermuda shorts, these slim-fitting varieties are to 2006 what capris and cropped pants were to 2005. However, this above-the-knee variety is about as easy to pull off as this year’s skinny jean.
Like both names would imply, these looks and this season’s entire obsession with sculpted legs works only if you are skinny, as close to a rail as possible, and enjoy walking. Otherwise casual shorts made chic will result in the same unpleasant aftermath of middle-school midriff shirts.
Walking shorts accessorized with defined calves and long legs have incredible potential. Without length they have the unfortunate effect of shortening legs.
With this “all about the leg” season, those among us with a curvier figure don’t need to feel left out. The classic and fresh approach to rising temperatures is the looser 50s chic skirts. Try channeling your inner Charlotte York. Hiding faults and accentuating feminine wiles, knee length skirts are the epitome of spring freedom from wool and tweed.
As always the effect of clothing and fashion rests with the individual. Your body and your taste with designer inspiration can result in increased appeal and savvy.
