A retrospective of his work, "Unrepentant Ego: the Self-Portraits of Lucas Samaras, is currently showing at the Whitney Museum of American Art; it will be up through February 8.
Samaras is a strange, unpredictable man. Obsessive, self-absorbed, inventive, prolific, technically gifted. Said fellow artist Robert Smithson: "His objects are infused with menace and melancholy."
