Gardens of the Mughal Empire

The Smithsonian's created a spectacular website exploring this subject.

The Mughals ruled the Indian subcontinent between 1526 and 1858, in an area now divided among India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Kashmir.

The website offers music clips, flowers, art, architecture, history, design principles, and research into 11 gardens scattered across the once-mighty empire.

An interactive features lets you explore the magnificent terraced Shalamar Garden at Lahore created by Shah Jahan, who also commissioned, among other things, the Taj Mahal.
