Mark Jen, whose blog about his first days at Google drew acclaim and criticism, was fired by Google on January 28, two days after he'd been taken to the principal's office and spanked.
Read all about it on his blogpost of earlier today.
Interesting that this post should appear today, the very day the Washington Post has a front-page story about bloggers increasingly losing their jobs as a result of their blogging.
Like the song goes, "You don't tug on Superman's cape"....

It's amazing that this guy got through Google's HR. They are well known for hiring only the brightest minds. There's got to be part of this story that we'll never hear.

I don't remember reading how old he is but the vibe is that he's pretty young. He seems contrite... and ready to say he was wrong... sets a good example for all of us when we make our own mistakes...

Actually, I think this was said here before, on an older post on this topic: most employers have rules about divulging certain information (usually recompense, including benefits), and I can't think of a single employer I've had that would allow blogging on company time.
I suspect that the bloggers who are increasingly losing their jobs as a result of their blogging fall into the latter category. A smaller percentage of them are likely to be those who, like this poor wight, blogged information that was considered proprietary or sensitive.

it is easy for bloggers to forget, especially on smaller sites or those without comments so that the writer isn't getting much feedback, that what is written on a blog really does go out into the world and can have real consequences. This has been really emphasized to me as we have gotten bigger here and quite regularly hear from those we review or refer to

Lesson -- Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Reading through some of the comments on the original site, there was one from a software engineer in El Salvador that should make everyone sit up and take notice.
It's difficult to feel sorry for this guy. Especially when there are so many good engineers out of work and would have given anything to work for a famous company like Google and have that credential on their resume. Well at least one will get a chance to fill his spot. What he caused himself is really nothing more than public self destruction. For what? A few days of fame in the blogosphere? Very poor judgement. Maybe he thinks he will write a book or get his own talk show now? He sounds young... but I suspect he really hasn't learned yet. Bitting the hand that feeds you in public without covering your identity is just plain stupid. As he gets older he might become a candidate for a Darwin award if he is not careful. Self destructive behavior has a way of being self limiting.--------------------------------------------
