This is yet another task that's much better done via computer than real world.
In the past, I'd use the map in the front of the phone book, which itself is hard to find. Then I'd try to figure out where on the map the address was, and then try to make out that faint gray line marking the boundaries of the various zip codes. And I still wasn't sure I'd got it right.
That was just for local addresses; for anything else, I had to make a trip to the Post Office to use that fat book chained to the work surface in the lobby. Never again.
A big shout-out to the United State Postal Service for designing a very useable website, almost google-like in its ease of use and simplicity. And that's the highest praise I can offer a website.
