FCC Wants to Nail CBS for Janet Jackson Incident

FCC Chairman Michael Powell had some choice words regarding the MTV-produced halftime show where the world got to see Janet Jackson's right breast. Powell says the FCC will have an inquiry which may result in large fines against CBS.

Powell says the action will be "thorough and swift." Currently, $27,500 is the largest fine the FCC can levy but lawmakers have been pushing for heavier punishments and the Bush Admin. favors a $275,000 fine for indecency.

FCC rules currently prohibit the airing of any "indecent" items between 6am and 10pm and any "obscene" items at any minute during the day. Powell says the Janet incident "tainted" what was a family celebration.
