Does the brain remain aware after beheading? Can it still feel pain after the spinal cord is severed? Can the eyes see, ears hear?

this is incorrect information. a severed spinal cord will instantly block all pain. the lowered blood pressure will cause instant unconsciousness. moving lips, eye lids, and other small facial muscles are as a result of flickering nerves. read more information here

It would not "smell the breath of the executioner" since that would require inhaling air into the nose- and impossible task without in tact lungs. Also 40 seconds would be a bit long. The blood would drain from the brain immediately since the carotid would be severed. With no blood, there would be brain death in only a few seconds. Even a cardiac arrest victim would lose consciousness in only a few seconds and they at least have basal blood pressure.

It sure hurts. A blade going through skin, muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, veins, arteries. Imagine that... There's a video on Youtube "Chinese Torture Atrocities: Beheadings Death by a 1000 Cuts", that shows a beheading photo in which the victim's face expresses intense pain at the moment of the beheading (7:35).
