A lot of people cringe at the thought of walking ten miles, never mind 1,700. Jimmy Wayne, country singer, grew up homeless. Decades later, he's trying to make sure no other child has to go through what he did.
On January 1st, Jimmy started his "Meet Me Halfway" campaign, leaving Nashville, TN and walking to Phoenix, AZ to raise awareness and money for charities helping to end youth homelessness. One of his charities was HomeBase Youth Services, which helps homeless people aged 18-21 in Arizona. Their goal is to “teach at-risk and homeless youth how to become self-sufficient adults.” The other is Monroe Harding, which helps homeless children in Nashville. Now, almost eight months later, Jimmy is reaching Phoenix—andwants you to be there.
Jimmy Wayne will perform a free concert at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill in Mesa, AZ on Saturday, July 31st, at 7:30 pm PT. Trust me, Jimmy is amazing in concert and you don't want to miss it. He's high-energy and puts on a great show. Then, Sunday at 8 am PT, you are invited to walk the last half mile with Jimmy. Meet at Indian Steele Park.
“This has been one of the most challenging, and at the same time rewarding experiences of my life,” Wayne said. “I know that might sound strange, but it’s true. This journey has made me think back on the childhood I had—there were many nights I didn’t know where I would sleep, and had no idea if I’d have any food. Even today, there are kids out there facing the same problems—nowhere to go, no one to care for them. It’s just amazing that in this country child homelessness and hunger are still issues. If this walk has helped even one child find a permanent home with a caring family, it’s been worth every step. And if me doing it all over again would help another, I’m ready.”
Jimmy Wayne has gotten a lot of coverage and raised awareness for homeless youth. He was featured on the cover of USA Today and in People Magazine. He even went to Washington D.C. and talked to legislators about homeless youth back in May.
Jimmy is less than 100 miles from Phoenix.
