The United States government would like to wish you happy holidays and inform you that you that the likelihood that you may be maimed or die a horrible death at any moment during these festive times has increased. In case you don't know what I am talking about, the government raised the security alert of the United States to "orange" or "elevated" on Sunday due to increased "chattering" in the terrorist underground about "something big".
Bush responded today by saying, "American citizens need to go about their lives, but as they do so, they need to know that governments at all levels are working as hard as we possibly can to protect the American citizens."
What exactly does an Orange Alert mean?
High risk of terrorist attacks.
" Coordinate necessary security efforts with armed forces or law enforcement agencies.
" Take additional precaution at public events.
" Prepare to work at an alternate site or with a dispersed work force.
" Restrict access to essential personnel only.
We all on the same page now? Great. Now time to rip into this garbage.
So what does an orange alert mean and why does the public at large need to know about it if the public is expected to go about their daily lives?
To "take additional precaution" when attending public event and going to public gatherings. An orange alert means that you, Joe Blow Paranoia need to take heed because there is an evil wind blowing.
First off, if you are in a public space and are not paying attention to your situation and your space around you, lumbering and lowing about like a complacent cow, expecting the government to take care of you, then you deserve the slaughter. There is something called common sense and you'll find life to be a hell of a lot easier for you if you deign to use it- no matter if it is red, yellow, orange, purple, pepto pink and green polkadots out
I'm not sure why this system ever came into place but I know the end of the world nuts really must be getting their rocks off. Mind you, way before this system was in place, there was a way to let the military and government institutions and the local police know that there was some sort of alert or other. It wasn't until after 9/11 that this "The United States presented to you by the colors blue, yellow, and red" showed up. The only things that these terror alerts do are feed into the fear of the public and that is not a good thing.

Victoria, as readers of Mac-a-ro-nies know, I've found the threat level scheme very useful when I can't decide what color to wear.

Just to lighten the mood a bit, here's a quote from "THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF OLIGARCHICAL COLLECTIVISM":
And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival. ~George Orwell

I think life is more a highway than Russian Roulette, and I want to ride it all night long.
