Sometimes when you're scared to do something, someone might call you a "chicken" and then start making chicken noises at you. But, if you think about it, you'd probably much rather be the guy who is scared to do something, instead of being the guy walking around making chicken noises.
When a chicken is afraid to do something, do the other chickens call him chicken? "Hey, I dare you to peck the farmer when he comes to feed us." "No way man, I'm not doing that." "You fuckin chicken!"
I wonder if chickens always think that the other chickens are calling them chicken... because they always walk around going "buck buck buck." "Hey, are you calling me a chicken?" "Nah... I'm just being a normal everyday chicken." "Oh, sorry, I misunderstood."
