Sometimes when there's a cat stuck in a tree, people call the fire department. But, how do you know that the cat is stuck in the tree? Maybe it's just sitting there? How can you tell the difference between a cat stuck in a tree, and a cat just IN a tree? Maybe it just doesn't feel like coming down yet. Does that make him "stuck?"
"Oh no, there's a cat on the chair... maybe its stuck on the chair! QUICK! Call for help!!" "Look out! There's cat on the floor, it could be stuck on the floor... Hurry, Someone call 911!" The cat is just sitting up there relaxing and he sees the flashing lights and hears the sirens... "Oh great, I decide to sit in a tree for 5 minutes and they call the fire department again. You can take off your fire proof helmets now guys, I'm just a cat in a tree. It's a good thing you brought the 80 foot hose... ya bunch of idiots!"

the problem is, youactually have a valid point. i nkow of plenty of cats that are mroe than capable of climbing up (and down) trees without any outside interference.
I would go with the easiest telltale sign - if the cat's up a tree and yowling and won't stop, that probably means it's stuck.

Or shoot it with a BB gun, if it doesn't try to get away, it's stuck.

If the BB gun fails, you could always
tell him that Bill Frist is on the way
to "rescue" him.

I love it when Steve Martin opens up the can of cat food and lures the recalcitrant feline out of the tree in Roxanne.

Cats don't get stuck in trees. They might *think* they are stuck but they'll come down when they hungry enough.
How many cat bones have you found in trees?

Uh, cats can get stuck in trees, and they can get dehydrated, but if you recue them how will they learn not to be so stupid?
I have a ten year old cat that I previously thought was pretty smart, right now, stuck 50 feet up a tree. Yowling occasionally, so I took pity and laddered up a bucket on a stick so she can collapse in that if absolutely necessary, but darned if I'm going to risk my neck any more than necessary.
And I have an exam I need to study for. Isn't that special?

Please help. I am serious. There is a cat from our neighborhood stuck in a cypress pine tree. It is clear up to the top. Fire dept. came out but did not have equipment to get it down. It must be 80 to 100 feet up and it has been there for 5 days without food or water. I put a can of tuna in trunk of tree. Wind is blowing and I can see cat swaying at the top of this tree. Please if you know of a tree company in the area, modesto or turlock, that rescues cat let me know. I have called many and they do not have the equipment. This cat is going to die if I cannot get him down. I seem to be the only person in the neighbor hood who cares but this is so sad. Please reply asap.

I am just getting back to the blog about the cat in the tree. Thanks to a young lady that took a picture of the cat and sent it to a t.v. station, the fire department came out and miraculously produced a ladder that was tall enough to get the cat down. Unfortunately, the cat got scared and jumped the 50 feet on his own and once again, amazingly after taking the cat to the vet, he was deemed a little scuffed and hungry and thirsty but basically okay. However it is not true that cats always land on their feet. This cat landed on his back and you would have thought that would have killed him, but he flipped himself over and ran for cover. It took awhile to catch him as he was shy because of all the people and t.v. station waiting around. Upon arrival at Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital, he was checked out immediately as I mentioned above. The owner of the cat was not able to pay the large bill for checking him out which came to over $800 that the fire department and Dr. Santos of Monte Vista Animal Hospital split the cost with advice to the owner to keep cat inside from now since he was an indoor cat and to be sure to get him fixed since he was not fixed. That happened in June of 2010. I was ever so grateful to Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital and the Fire Department that they payed the bill as the owner of the cat was a very nice young lady that was my neighbor whom I happened to drive to the animal hospital. I so love animals and I am so pleased that this story had a happy ending and I wanted to thank the hospital and the fire department for being so cooperative. I wanted to thank the young girl that alerted the t.v. station about the situation because without her doing this, this cat would have stayed up there till it died or starved. I could not find this blog till now, 2 years later but it is never too late to be grateful and to say "Thank You."
