Bloggers for Haiti Can Help World Food Programme Relief Effort

Part of: NewsFlash

Last September I wrote an article about the Bloggers against Hunger campaign, which was started by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

WFP wants to escalate this campaign to help Haiti in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. As many as 3 million people could be in need of food aid.

The World Food Programme is starting to provide food with its existing stocks in Haiti. High energy biscuits from its El Salvador headquarters are reinforcing this food supply. The biscuits are critical for they can be quickly distributed to those in need and do not require cooking.

But these supplies will go quickly. It is critical for the international community to provide enough emergency food aid for Haiti. The pipeline of supplies must be also maintained over a significant period of recovery. WFP announced today it is planning a 6-month emergency operation.

Keep in mind that the World Food Programme has recently been operating with a shortfall of funding for many of its programs worldwide. Donations are vital to the UN food agency as it seeks to provide aid in Haiti as well as numerous other countries suffering from conflict or natural disasters.

Bloggers can take action by spreading the word about the suffering in Haiti and showing how people can help. To donate to the food relief effort in Haiti you can visit the World Food Programme. In the United States you can donate to the Friends of the World Food Program. The World Food Programme has created a banner for bloggers to post on their site encouraging donations. The link to the banners is at the WFP site.
