The fact that a few selections are the music of Bob Marley - well that should bode well for the future of these P-casts. (at least in my ear) : )

    Good Luck 'casters!

Temple's right -- there's an over-abundance of testosterone on the podcast.

Even the one segment that *does* feature a woman happens to be one in which she's taking the secondary role. For the next one I'll submit a segment where she's leading. :-)

Lower volume? Damnation. I am using Garage Band - Temple, any suggestions on what I can do to punch up my volume levels?

DJR, I use GB as well, and always leave the volume levels at the default for our "live" segments, such as the one included in this podcast.

Thanks, Phillip. I usually leave the volume alone on my 'live' tracks as well. I might have to spike it or something. I wonder what the input level for mic is...

I noticed my live stuff is a lot quieter than the music on Episode 5 of my podcast, too. I am going to have to do some experimenting with this before I roll out 6.

I can boost it up as well DJ on this end. I just caught it too late and changing it would have taken another 45 minutes of saving time.

Any tips on reducing file size?. I think if people record at 16000 mhz instead of 41,000 it would help as well.

I lowered the bitrate on the file and it is much smaller -- less than 18MB. Uploading now...

Looks good, Temple. I'll try and give some feedback tonight when I get home to listen.

As for volume, I also do all of my composing in GB, but combine tracks in Audacity. This way, Audacity allows you to have separate tempos (instead of the 120 default in GB), and you can adjust the volume for individual tracks.

Yes Mark, I always wound up recording two mono tracks in Audacity, usually at a high volume for talking and a really low volume for music. Then I'd mix it into a final track for export.

But that's when you're talking OVER the music, right EricB?

I've updated the post to point to the smaller file.

  • 12 - Eric Berlin

    Oct 03, 2005 at 2:04 pm

Yes, otherwise there's just one mono track, which never takes up a lot of memory.

Hey, does anyone have a good "CENSORED" bleep SFX (think "The Osbournes)?

  • 14 - Phillip Winn

I use GB to handle multiple tracks at different volume levels when needed. I use it for everything, in fact, then export to iTunes so I can convert to a very small MP3.

I don't compose music inside GB, at least not during a podcast, so the bpm matters not at all to me. :-)

DJ - Try googling for it, there is a huge load of stuff out there, much of which you can use for free.

I'm kidding. I will work on the volume thing.

Phillip, did you use GB to drop the bit rate or did you do that in iTunes? I might have to try that with mine (in addition to getting my sound levels better).

  • 19 - Phillip Winn

    Oct 03, 2005 at 3:39 pm

GB spits out an AIFF file to iTunes, so I encode in iTunes at a custom bit rate. Set it to 64kbps stereo, then switch to mono, so you'll get 32kbps. :-)

  • 20 - DJRadiohead

    Oct 03, 2005 at 3:45 pm

And after you have twice downconverted the AIFF file you go to MP3/AAC?

  • 21 - Phillip Winn

    Oct 03, 2005 at 3:50 pm

    Er, no.

    1. Record the podcast in GB. It's raw GB data at this point (.song file)

    2. Export to iTunes. This creates a Hi-Fi .AIFF file in iTunes.

    3. Set the Importing prefs in iTunes to 64kbps stereo, mono, and then "Convert selection to MP3" in iTunes.

    That's one step from Hi-fi AIFF to Lo-fi MP3.

I guess I should have just asked it that way to begin with. I am thinking of going home, tweaking my levels a bit and re-uploading episode 5 tonight. Or just keeping this info for Episode 6.

I might have to do a short, special edition Episode 6 in light of the football of this past weekend. ROLL TIDE!!

I'm sad and disappointed that none of you wanted to talk to me. Oh, wait...that's right. I'm fairly boring. Eric Berlin can attest to that. Hehe.

One of these days, we'll all have to get together and have one great big party podcast. Huh? Whaddya mean it's already been done? Not with ME it hasn't!

    Great job, Temple.

The inaugural BRPS is a good start, the collaborative effort is there. Let's hope more will contribute. Maybe ask people to do phone blurbs like the Olsen interview.

My humble recommendation is to take the music snippets lumped in the beginning and intersperse them throughout the podcast to break up the all-talk sections (like the Editor's Picks).

That, and Temple... the H in Sahm is not silent! Say Sam. Say Ah. Now put the Ah in Sam. Sahm! SAHHHHM! *sigh* However, I consider us even, since I used an unauthorized sample of you in my podcast. Heh.

    Good work, gents.

I so remember promising to do something for this. But sports gets dated fast. And my voice sounds funny. Hmmm. I'll shoot for the next one.

    Deadline?
