Blogcritics RADIO PODCAST SHOW - Number 3

L ast time out, we reduced the bitrate down too far in the interest of size. A few people, including two of those who offered their music to the Podcast, noticed this degradation of sound quality. This time the file size is a bit larger because Podcasts really are designed for those with broadband connections. Those podcasts with music are going to be larger than those that are talking only.
Blogcritics Radio Podcast Show 3 also brings a reluctant change - an early exit for the Editors' Picks for the Podcast. The long list of worthy posts here at Blogcritics.org just did not translate well to the audio form. It slowed down whatever else was going on.
Podcast Timeline
00:00 ::: Intro, Temple traumatized by his car and its death. Temple's Law of Car Repair Finance comes to life.
02:40 ::: The Obnoxious Couple and their good memories of each other and their pissed off moments. Try to tell the difference. Funny.
12:23 ::: Aaron McMullan - Blue From Black, from the online album "Broke Sun Fixed." Acoustic.
15:38 ::: The PJ - Doing Explanation things and urging you to join Blogcritics if you want to join the podcast.
17:34 ::: Tony Figueroa - live comedy about life in Cincinnati, and a moment with the KKK. Recorded at the Coffee Fix. Comedy is his ... er ... night job.
22:36 ::: The PJ names the CONTEST WINNER. ... ... The other big event of this BRPS 3 is the announcement of the contest winner. The contest delivered at the last podcast was to name the songs and performers or composers of a montage of 31 songs that played at the beginning of BC Radio Podcast 1

Had some interesting elements. Can only get better in time. Hard to say what constitutes a great podcast.
Probably a loose script and some exceptional music and website tips.
I enjoyed it but felt there were some self-conscious moments.

Maybe at the end of each podcast posting, we should link to instructions on how to join the next podcast. I think some of us (me) are not quite sure how to jump in. I'm attempting to make a podcast and will send a mp3 file soon.
I'll listen to the current podcast to see if I can figure out what we're looking for, or what works.
It's an ambitious project - thanks!

I listened over my morning coffee. Very enjoyable. Great work guys (and gals)!
5 - DJRadiohead
I liked what Suss and Chelsea had going... that could develop into a decent bit.
6 - Mark Saleski
more bondage talk!!!
uh...sorry, too much coffee this morning.
;-)

Duuuuuke!
Good stuff, sir! Very good stuff.
And consider this your warning: I am going to start a riot if we don't get a new podcast from MondoIrlando. Seriously. This will happen. Blood will be shed. Faheys will be kill't. You have been warned.

Temple, on the contest--- I just checked and sure enough, DJ Shadow's 'You Can't Go Home Again' contains a sample of "El Condor Pasa"... how funny that I knew the sample, but not the original! Guess I still have some youth to me after all.

...what ↑he said.

There is a more moribund program than Ole Miss. Boy, did Alabama blow!
Let's just hope they look better on Saturday.

MT, thanks for listening.
If you thought this had self-conscious moments, you should have tried Podcast 1.
If itis the humble host to which you are referring, this time, not one self-conscious moment.
Thanks Connie, "over coffee" Nice.
Parker, I am double-dog determined to get more podcast instructions up and ready for anyone. I'm about three quarters there but moving up to an editor position - temporarily and unwillingly I might add :-) - tends to kill all time for entended projects.
Er, except this one.
Oh and MT? Web site tips? Curious minds wanna know.

Thanks for the compliments, the whole podcast is great! Sadly, that really wasn't even scripted. That's just how we act. Or how I tell Sussman to act.
13 - Chelsea Snyder
Temple's speaking patterns are remarkably similar to Captain Kirk.
KHHHAAAAANNNN!!!!!!!!!!
14 - Temple A. Stark
He's a better actor.
My vocal cords sometimes have trouble catching up to my brain, so there's a lag. Think of it as Matrix-bound.
(And if your piece was scripted - which it wasn't - you guys would be better actors than Shatner and I put together. And that's saying something !!!!!!!)
15 - Mary K. Williams
I feel so strange to hear my name mentioned on the Podcast. Strange but good!
Mark Sahm - Thank you for your gentlemanly (is that a word?) withdrawl from the Contest. I bow to your music knowledge.
I promise to put the device to very good use!
: )

Chelsea, a little unsolicited advice. You and Sussman have a fun chemistry that comes over your bit. I don't think I would fully script it but I would suggest trying to find a way to tighten it up just a little. I don't if some type of rehersal would ruin the spontenaity. It might be some production editing. It's something to think about because I did find myself cracking up at the two of you insulting each other.
17 - Andrew Ian Dodge
Thanks for the kind words mate. We have more where that came from...well whenever we get em' back from our producer.
18 - Phillip Winn
Don't tell anyone, but I've found that occasional prep work helps a bit with my podcast. Sure, most of the time it's 100% unrehearsed, unscripted, and so on (and it shows!), but sometimes I mention the gist of what we'll be talking about over dinner, which gives Herself time to think up snotty things to say.
Also, one time, the whole thing came out so badly that I said, "screw it!" and hit record again. The second time through it was a totally different show, and much better. So if you thought OBH #009 was bad, you should have heard the first take!
We've only done that once, though.
19 - Matthew T. Sussman
Actually we came up with the premise in advance -- a conversation topic, if you will, to initially address then promptly ignore in lieu of hilarious bickering.
Still, this was our maiden voyage.
20 - DJRadiohead
And it was a good first time out, Sussman. I think we will all find our early efforts painful as we continue down this path.
21 - Mark Sahm
Mary K.: I already have a mic set-up for recording, so I was more than happy to be "gentlemanly". I just wanted to see how much of Temple's music collection I could pinpoint, which was scary. Enjoy!

great job as ever folks, although this is the best yet, which is the way you want these things to progress, i'd imagine.
losing the editors picks was a smart move, i'd imagine. it sucks that it can't be translated to this format, but, well, it can't.
enjoyed everyone's pieces a hell of a lot, just a great show in general.
congratulations!
and DJ, thank you man. and keep that riot hat behind closed doors for the meantime. i have a sneakin suspision tomorow may yeild results on the podcast front. i've decided it doesn't matter if it sucks, i've been away from it a while, it's BOUND to suck. but podcast 15 should be back on track.

and now some constructive criticism - please don't take this the wrong way. we're all grown ups. the dynamics of it all need to be worked on a bit i think. it's all very very low-key, in how it sounds. i think it needs to be a livlier affair, if you know what i mean, a bit more arresting. this issue gets less as the weeks go on and the show gets better on account of folks getting more comfortable, new tricks being learned etc, but i think definately something needs to be done for to make it a "holy shit, this is amazing!" type thing, rather than a "oh, cool. i might listen to that. i dunno." It needs to grab hold the attention glands for folks that have no interest whatsoever in blogcritics.org, by which i mean it has to keep them listening even if they haven't a clue who anyone is etc. this isn't so much a content issue, since the content is wonderful. more a overall presentation (not presentation as in presenting etc) thing that needs to be worked out, i think. it's all a tad opiated at the minute, i think we need to drag it in the direction of some high-grade amphetamine. just my thoughts, folks, and not intended as attacks or anything of the like, since i've loved every episode.

Duke, very pleased to hear that news. I will try to contain my awesome riot squad. I need laughter in the worst way on account of my iPod having died tonight for no apparent reason. Some Mondo swearing is just what the fucking doctor ordered.
I just put up episode 6 of m'own podcast and 7 will go up this week. I have a feeling you will like 7...
25 - DJRadiohead
I think Duke makes a good point about the tone of the cast as well. Not sure what the best way to help that along. But I think a spit of energy might be helpful to the flow of the cast.
